I am not sure if this is the best spot for this thread. I recently moved to Parker county and trying to figure out the best route to take on my trip to S Texas. When I was up north I would just take 35 all the way to Encinal. Now that I am here my map said to take 281 through Stephenville all the way to San Antonio. Do any of you travel this route? Would I be best to just to hit 35w and head south? I will be leaving at around 5am so I can make the evening hunt. Any help is appreciated.
Also food recommendations will help.

It really depends on the day and what time you're traveling.
I've grown to really dislike Waco simply because of 35 driving through Waco.
My wife has an aunt and uncle that currently live in Aledo. We'll take 281 occasionally if we're not picking up her cousin in Austin on the way up. Even then, we'll often take 183 to Lampassas from Austin and hit 281 all the way to 220 in Hico. Then 67 to Glen Rose, 144 to Granbury, 377 until we hit Kelly Road.
You're not going to save time going that route, but if you get annoyed in stop and go, this may be the way.
I'm sure others who make that drive more often have better info.

I will be leaving on a Wednesday morning probably 5am. usually when I take 35 at that time I sometimes take the loop around austin depending on traffic. I just was not sure about stop and go small towns etc if I take 281. I also assume lots of deer will be on the move early in the morning down that route.

281 is jacked up with construction north of SA. from Parker county, I-35 straight down will add 30-45 minutes to your drive. I would head down 281 to Stephenville then hit 377 over to Comanche and take 16/87 all the way down to I-10 at Comfort then over to SA and I-35. Much prettier drive and it'll take you about the same amount of time as going down 281.

I took 281 from Parker county 2 weeks ago and would recommend it today. There is some construction, but not too bad.

Dallas Love Field, SWA to Harlingen. DFW American Eagle to Laredo about 45 minutes from Encinal, Harlingen about 3 hours from Encinal.

Thanks to all. I will try out 281 and might just leave a little earlier to make sure I make the evening hunt. I will just have to watch out for deer.

while still at home, down load Waze on your phone, the plug in destination, it will give you the fastest based on that time (but traffic / wrecks can drastically change outcome) along with alternate routes should there be backups along the way.

thanks to all. Waze and my other map app show between a 10 and 15 minute difference in travel time between 35 and 281 so I might just flip a coin. I have been talking to my friend and the bucks are now pushing. I wish I could leave today but work has me tied down.

depending on time of day, the normal choke points around the Austin area going IH35 can add 10-30 minutes each. It starts in Round Rock where 79 & 620 dump in (backs up frequently past 1431), then again before the upper/lower deck split down past the river ... if you are going during the week

Made the hike down 281 and it was great. Much prettier than i35. I only got backed up in Bourne from construction.
