Just picked up a pre-64 Model 70 Super Grade (1951 I think) and it’s stamped “300 MAGNUM”. Barrel is a Winchester for sure.
Question is this: I assume this is a 300 H&H, given the .300 Win Mag wasn’t invented yet.
Thanks

I think they started offering it in .300 win mag in the early 60’s (like 62 or 63)

Try chambering a 300 H&H case; it will not fit in a 300 win mag chamber.

Thanks I would suggest taking the gun, since you don't know the caliber, to a reputable gun shop and have them determine exactly what it is.

Read up a little on this, if your rifle was made in ‘51 then there is a good possibility it is indeed 300 H&H Apparently there was a transition period (1945-1951) where Winchester changed their barrel stamps from 300 Magnum to 300 H&H Magnum Source: Rock Island Auction

Thanks! A friend says he has a book on pre-64 Model 70s. He said he dig it out and check.
