What does "Special" mean?

Reference the straight 'english' buttstock

The first Special Fields came with 21in. Fixed chokes and later Rem chokes and then some were made with 23in barrels. I have a 21in 20ga 1100 with rem chokes. Fast handling and a pleasure to shoot. Some came with the straight English stock and some with regular stocks. Made in 80s.

I absolutely love mine. Works for home and field. Action is like butter.

I have a Beretta A303 20 ga in that configuration. Very light and fun to shoot shotgun.

Tuesday bump

I have both a 870 and an 1100 field specials in 12g. Owned them since about 92, I was told (rumor and hearsay forsure) that these were specifically designed to mimic the english style shorter barrel shotguns with straight stocks to hunt from horseback like they did in the old world hunting fox, grouse and etc. They are extremely fast shouldering guns and I usually get the first shots off every time I take one out. They are different than standard 870/1100, they have shorter forestocks and barrel lugs are not the same spacing, tried to put a standard 1100 barrel on my special it didn't work.
