I know I’m too late for this season but I’m wanting add about a 2 acre food plot to my hunting area next season. What grows good in the central Texas area, I’m going to do oats but I also want to mix something else like peas in there also. What have y’all had luck with besides oats?

I buy a mix at our local feed store (supposedly custom mixed for our area) that has oats, peas and clover in it. I usually add rye grass. I keep saying I'm going to plant turnips but I haven't yet.

All depending on where your property is located...in NTX Clover and beets are OK in the late fall...ground prep is the key.
Harrow the ground 1-2 inches deep, plant seeds and then make sure to chain drag...for seed coverage.
Do not mix in tall grains like oats...it prevents clover and beets from getting enough water!
Then...pray for rain!

Oats....100lb per acre and Austrian winter peas...50lb per acre...........all you will ever need in my opinion.
I would add if you don't get a soil sample, 150lbs of 13-13-13 per acre. Add rain and you have a deer magnet.

I tried planting winter peas just once on a lease in East Texas. Much like kernels of corn, it didn't take the hogs very long to find every one of them.

But agreed, they make for excellent deer forage where they can be grown more easily.
