My grandfather Oxner was named Rubin. He was called Mister Rube. My grandfather Evanoff was named Marco. My older brother and first born was named Rubin Marco Oxner. Stella Oxner and
Louise Evanoff were the grandmothers. My first born sister was Stella Louise Oxner. My Daddy was William Bryant Oxner. That is where I got my name? The list goes on. Am I alone in this area? confused2

When my son was born I stayed away from family names other than last name. Had family from both side saying he should have combo of them from both sides. Told everyone to go get bent over elsewhere! He should have HIS own name not someone elses to live up to or heaven forbid they end up being a POS and tarnishing it. He has his own destiny and identity so his name is his not a hand me down. I'm still kinda irate over my name so I wouldn't want to pass the head ache on.

My uncle Johnny's first son was called plain old John Henry. John drove a cookie truck back in the day. He later took over his daddy's peach orchard and grew a few watermelons on the side. food

Named after my great uncle (who I never met) - He was Ira Dewey Leggett (named after Admiral Dewey, like many of his generation) - I am Dewey. Thankfully I was not a 3rd - my dad was Redden Llewellyn Leggett, Jr. He went by R.L.

My wife worked in L&D at the hospital. She said a family wanted to name their first son Samuel Oliver Bass.

Doctor refused to sign the Birth Certificate.. Family wanted to know why, he said his initials would be SOB, the mother was horrified when he told her.

Many folks are named John.

What is the banging silverware for?

All of our kids either have a family name or a name with a special meaning.

Oldest daughter's middle name is my Grandmother's name.
Second daughter's first name is after a family friend, and middle name has meaning.
Third daughter's first name is after my sister and my wife's sister. Her middle name is same as my Sister's and Grandmother's.
Son's first name is my middle name, and his middle name is after my wife's Dad.

Personally I think names should have some sort of meaning or significance.

I agree Doc.

My parents and older brothers were long passed on when I got remarried and started another family. I wanted to pass my Dad's name on to my Son, and my Momma's name on to my baby girl because they have meaning.

My wife said "We are not naming our kids after dead people."

Dead people. No love, honor, or respect.

Anyway, hope you and your beautiful family are doing well Sir.

Thank you, Skinner, appreciate the kind words, Sir. Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving!

I never met my Dad's mother....she passed before I was born. But when I told my Dad we were naming our oldest daughter after his mom, he cried....that meant a lot to him, and it means a lot to me as well.

My younger sister passed from leukemia at 25 years old. We honored her by naming my third daughter after her.

Just a couple examples of why names mean a lot to my family. Like you said, love, honor, and respect....I hope my kids do the same with their children one day.

I hate to hear that Doc.

My big brother died from AIDS when he was 25 yrs old (hemophiliac/hit by car bike riding/blood transfusion when 15).

Cool thing is my oldest Nephew has honored my Big Brother and named his youngest Son after my Big Brother. Even when death was knocking on his door, he got in the truck and drove for hours to pick us up and take us hunting, or fishing. I hope to see him again, unless I get sent to hell. Which is possible.

Patrick is a good name IMO.

Cobey rolled through my momma's family and I really liked it. The original Cobey was my Grandfather, whose name was really Elmer Wayne. As the story went, when he moved to the city they began calling him country boy, which turned into Cobey. That's all he ever went by as an adult. His son, my uncle, had Cobey as his middle name. Asa and Ruth has rolled through my father's family for generations. Have a half brother named Asa and he despises it. He is likely to be the last. I have zero contact with him and he won't be naming any children. I always wanted to pass the Cobey name along, but that isn't gonna happen after having three daughters. None of them ever knew my grandfather.

My eldest, Golden Child, told me she was gonna name our grandson Henry so we could call him Hank. I was all in with that. When born, she advised they named him Hudson so they could call him Hud. I have been honored & referenced past more than I deserve - locally, in TX Monthly, in Forbes, but that there lil' naming event is likely to be the highest honor in my life. Amygirl then named the 2nd grandson after my Dad.
