Any information on what’s going on in Montague County? Is the rut over? Just seeing a few does and a couple of small bucks.

On my camera last Saturday night I had three smaller bucks chased off by a big 8. Other than that, I haven't seen much rut activity.

Thanks for the responses. All of that is pretty much what I’m seeing, and not seeing. The weather can’t be helping. Maybe next week? Good luck too all.

I believe the Rut started a few weeks ago. Saw intense chasing then it shut down. But in years past, this week seems to pick by up, possibly second rut hitting the late does. Did start to see more activity this week on camera with a few more bucks and one old warhorse I’ve never seen before show up last night on camera. Good luck out there.

Grandsons and wives/girlfriends are hunting my place South of Bowie this weekend. I’ll chime in when I talk to them.

I hunt in Clay and believe the rut ended around Nov. 18

I’m thinking the buck I saw chasing was the end and not the beginning of the rut. Unfortunately

The rut in East Texas was 15 to 20 days late according to Dr. Deer

I always thought Dr Deer(and most biologists) said that the actual peak breeding takes place at almost the same time annually per areas. He/they say it’s statistical based on back dating fawn birth dates and measuring embryos etc.
It’s just the perception by hunters that varies based on their observations of rutting related sightings that can vary by weather and other factors and may or may not coincide with actual breeding. Not saying right or wrong but my interpretations of studies I have seen.

I'm thinking Halloween to the first week of gun is peak rut in Montague. Right now should be in the middle of the follow up, just maybe not as intense, but who knows. They might stay nocturnal to beat the heat.

This week I’m starting to see the bucks group together. Maybe get a shot at one of the older guys. They haven’t gone nocturnal yet but close. Showing up right at dusk at least on my property.

Grandsons saw nothing recently. So far, a GF took a nice buck but that’s all.

All of our decent bucks have disappeared. We’ve struggled all year to find a couple mature deer and they’re significantly smaller than either of the 150’s that were killed last year. We have 10 cameras out and nothing that excites us.

They are hammering the feeders right now. We use All Season 2000lb drop feeders. Filled up the 2 busiest the week before thanksgiving and they are both empty.

I have noticed hardly any acorns this year. Past three years they were thick. Son got a buck Saturday that actually jumped in a pen. Haven't seen a buck over 2 years old in a pen in 6 years there. Got lucky! Buddy stopped by the lease tonight and saw a monster in the middle of the road outside our gate after dark.

Just spent 5 days at my place South of Bowie. Didn’t hear a shot.
