In general, how is the Texas Heard doing after the freeze with thousands dying. I know some ranches aren't hunting them till they get the heard built back up. I was hunting in Comfort (near Boerne and Kerrville)last weekend. Usually the Axis are everywhere. This trip 0.

What are ya'll seeing? Any huntable numbers?

It was my understanding that the large die off's from the freeze where only in certain parts of Texas that didn't have great cover. Several of the folks that I know that have large ranches in South Texas haven't really seen numbers of Axis drop off. Saw a ton of Axis on my trip from Menard to Del Rio a couple weeks ago, lots of dead ones as well on the side of the road. Now, they have had some antler growth issues with bucks that were in velvet at the time of the freeze.

We didn’t lose any on our place bt junction and Sonora but we got less ice (more snow) than they did to the south around rocksprings where I heard a lot didn’t survive.

We are seeing a lot of axis with broken antlers.

How did the Axis herd at SLRSP handle the freeze? I've got a hunt scheduled for the end of Jan thru the 1st week of Feb. Not looking for antlers but for a freezer filler trip. Sounds like a really rough freeze for sure.

I'm leaving plenty of thermal cover at my place and I'm seeing the same amount drift through. No real die off that I could see. Hope to have a couple of monsters next year. rifle (North most Kimble County.)

We have several 34-36+ survive but have broke off main beam. Good news is that they won’t get shot by us or neighbors this year. Should be some really bigs ones this spring/summer. We are just west of Roosevelt

Seen a few smaller this month that aren’t busted up.

Neighbor found 10 dead on the adjoining ranch after the freeze. I'm not seeing the numbers I saw last year. I'm in the very NW corner of Kimble county.

We are 10 miles due west of the state park and we aren't seeing near the numbers that we were seeing the last few years. Still seeing them and have some good bucks but not nearly the numbers as before the freeze.

Beautiful bucks TexFlip! That chocolate antler one demands attention! They both do, but the darker color intrigues me.

He was more than likely in velvet during the freeze and got frostbite. Or so I've been told.

Numbers seem fine to me. The ranches that didn’t run out of protein were fine.

Axis numbers are down quite a bit around here. But still quite a few hanging around the river though.
