One of my friends is an avid bow hunter. Yesterday evening right before dark he arrowed a buck deer. On the phone he said the hit was pretty far back and there was no blood to be found when it left out. He also told me the deer was in a wall eyed thicket and about a half an arrow of penetration is what he thought he got with no exit. After finding no blood he was patient and let it be for 3 hours. My friend was spot on. Compounding the track he told me there were about a dozen deer there when he loosed his arrow. I’m not a tracking dog guy but for my friends, my bird dog will pull tracking dog duty if you ask it of him. Put the GPS collar on the Pudelpointer last night and told him to “find it”…

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

Very cool Smokey Bear…you’ve not done any deer tracking training with the dog? I’m impressed regardless.

I did a little bit of tracking work when he was a puppy so he knew when I said “find it” he was tracking. In retrospect all he needed was opportunity. The tracking ability is hard wired in this one.

Thanks, didn’t realize they were hard wired like that.

Well the bird dog and me have been busy with waterfowl and upland birds till last Monday. I got a call asking me to get my bird dog out on a deer track again. Another bow shot deer. Shot was actually pretty good. A little high but a double lung pass through. Bow hunter did not find blood. I think the chest cavity had to fill up to the holes before it started leaving a blood trail. Recovery took about 20 minutes, due in large part to the fellow that shot the deer being mistaken about which way he thought the deer ran. I kept sending him and my dog kept calling BS and wanting to go 90 degrees left of where I was sending him. Stupid dog, right? After 15 minutes of that nonsense, I let him go. 5 minutes and 250 yards later he had the doe. How it made it 250 yards double lunged surprised me.
