Opening morning, one of our officers got a theft call for service. The lease hunter told him he left his Yeti cooler and hunting bag in his elevated blind Friday afternoon so he didn’t have to lug it up Saturday morning. The hunter showed up ready to go for opening day only to find his property had been stolen. A game camera close by showed two guys wearing hunting clothing with one carrying a long arm. It also captured their truck, but only from the side.

In this hunter’s bag were a bottle of booze, which was removed and left in the blind, a loaded Glock 19, binocular, a couple of boxes of rifle ammo, and a few knives, some with sentimental value. He estimated his loss at over $1,500.00. I wasn’t there and the report didn’t say, but I bet he didn’t get to hunt opening morning due to his ammo being taken so that is another big loss.

This lease was on a private ranch in the Texas Hill Country, but this hunter’s blind was on at least a portion that wasn’t fenced. I’m sure there are similar stories as this, but just putting this out there as a reminder to maintain security of your property in an attempt to limit self injury due to kicking yourself!

I would never leave those items (especially a firearm) overnight anywhere. That’s just asking for it to go missing.

My blinds are pad locked. Yea, I know...easy enough if they really want in.

Those guys couldn't be real hunters. That is just very wrong when your deer blind isn't safe.

Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

It’s a good reminder of the crappy humans we have trespassing and stealing stuff others have worked for

The best reality check before leaving a firearm anywhere is to remember you normally keep it locked away in a safe.

Personally, the only hunting related ‘thefts’ I’ve worked is where rifles and shotguns were inadvertently left at a camp or a hunting site, or they drove away with the firearm left on a vehicle only to fall off as they drove away. Still, all events which make you want to kick yourself.

No way I would ever leave a gun especially, or anything of value unattended in a blind. Down here mojados use deer blinds for shelter, and if you lock the doors they will just break in.

I left a rifle between a morning and evening hunt last week, but I was at the place all day and exposure time was ~5-6 hours on a weekday when nobody else was around. Still, it made me nervous enough to plan to never do it again.

Couple years ago mid day we had a BP helicopter chasing a group of mojados near camp, some tried to hide in the house blind that I was about to hunt that evening. Never know when they're coming through. I don't know if they would have taken a gun or not since they were being chased.

reminds me of a call I had when I was a Coast Guard boarding officer in Port Aransas back around 2003. A couple duck hunters were hunting a blind out at Deadmans hole by the JFK causeway. They thought if they left a jon boat tied up to the blind on a Saturday night with all of their gear in the blind it meant they "claimed" it for Sunday morning. The idiots left blind bags, AND 2 SHOTGUNS!!! in the blind! Both SBE2's. Guess what was all gone come Sunday morning? Yeah, those guys came to the CG station raising hell, wanting us to go board every boat we could find. There was nothing we could do about it other than direct them to the Nueces County Sherriff's office to file a report with them.

I was pretty young back then and it blew my mind at how stupid and careless those guys were.

Sorry to hear this, you can't give the bad guys a chance there everywhere.

I don't even like leaving my rifle in the blind to recover a deer let alone between hunts. Only thing I've left is my crossbow a couple times and snacks. No ammo and no rifles.

Closest I ever came was I put a cased rifle on the roof of my jeep and backed out of the driveway. When i cut the wheel it slid of the roof onto the hood, scared the peewhizzer out of me at 3 am with no coffee!
