Over a year ago, I started working with my two oldest grandsons (8&6) on shooting a rifle and hunting. We started with BB Gun, then moved to a pellet gun, Ruger 10/22, a 410 for turkey and then to a 6.8. Both grandsons killed turkey in the spring and it was time to graduate to pigs. This evening, we sat patiently waiting for pigs to come in when a sounder of 20 showed up. My youngest grandson was up first and he made an 80 yard shot dropping to hog in her tracks. The sow dropped to her butt like her back legs gave out, squealed and fell over dead. My grandson was too short to standup and shoot, so he had to sit on my right knee. The entire time he was trying to line up the hog, I could feel his entire body shaking. I asked him afterwards if he was nervous and he said nope, I was just excited. Much to my oldest grandsons dismay, the hogs ran off his brother dropped his sow. I told him to be patient and quite and they may come back. Sure enough, five minutes later the pigs were back. My oldest grandson lined up the biggest hog and put the shot through both shoulders. She tried to take off, but both front legs we done, so she was plowing up the ground. She made one final push and ended up doing a flip before collapsing. He turned around and said, hey, she’s a circus hog because she did a flip. His brother thought that was the funniest thing he had heard and couldn’t stop laughing With the birth of each grandchild, I’ve had Mike Conner make each one them a knife. Today was the first day they used their knives while helping me take the back straps from their hogs. 8 and 6 years is a long time to wait for the boys to use their knives, but it was great seeing them put them to work today. Normally I let hogs get eaten by the coyotes, but we’re going to eat the back straps from these two sows. In the end, all of us turn into a memory and I hope to leave a legacy with my grandkids that doesn’t fade too fast. I’m almost certain my grandsons won’t forget today anytime soon.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!
