put a couple rounds through my 270 and it shoots about 2" high at 50 yards. Any idea what that will equate to at 100-120 yards? or even further out?

Need to know what type of projectile and how fast it's leaving the muzzle.

Sounds like you'll be high, high at 100-120, maybe 3-4" high. Think you should be an inch low at 50 which should put you about .5"-1" at 100.

What he said

Most of the time, zero at 50 yds, one inch low at 25 yds and 1.5 inches high at 100. Right on at 150 yds.

Dead on at 50 gives you a zero right around 225 yards give or take a few. Two high at 50 should put you quite high at 150-175, but you should look at a ballistic calculator for more exact numbers. I’d lower the point of impact myself.

Assuming typical 130 grain at 2850 fps with a bc similar to a 130 grain interlock. This equates to about a 20 yard zero, should be about 2 inch high at 50 yards and 4-5 inches high at 100-120 yards.

Assuming your hunting a feeder at 100-120 yards like many do, I would definitely re zero at 100 yards.

Great info here, I appreciate all the feedback. I got in a hurry 2 years ago and shot over the back of a giant and it's been haunting me ever since. Been planning on sighting it in and zeroing at my feeder range of around 100-120 but haven't been able to make the time. This gives me a lot more confidence (and highlights the fact I need to make more time at the range)

If you have time to hunt, then you have time to zero the rifle. You at least owe it to the animal

This, literally takes less than 30 minutes.

Take your rifle and zero it at 25 yards and be done with it. Unless of course, you're hunting in the mountains or long range shooting.

I do not understand why you would want to zero a rifle where it will shoot 3 -4 inches high at the distance you will almost always be shooting game at.

My shots are not always 100 yards. Most are 35 yards and occasionally out to 200 yards, so I try to optimize my shot by keeping it a 16oz beer can sized target with out having to hold over with a fixed scope.

I was reading this thread thinking the same thing. For Texas whitetails, dead on at 100 yards should serve you well.

I completely understand the principle, maximum point blank range etc.

The OP says 100-120 shot range why try to set him up for 25-200 when his rifle will be what I would consider significantly off at his intended target range. Ive shot from 20-200 yards with a 270 zeroed at 100 yards with no issues at 200 it is just under 4 inches low shooting a mild load 150 grain at 2725 PFS. The 130's would be flatter and dead on at his 99% shot range. It just seems better to have it dead on for 99% of your shot and a little of for the 1% than vise versa.

The op ended with "or even further out?"

Wouldn't 200 yards equate to even further out? I zero my 270 1" high at 100. That gets me out to about 250 yards, which is the farthest I take that rifle. If I anticipate a farther shot requirement, I'll carry one of my other rifles.

If you keep this up you'll keep missing.
Spend some time at the range and get it right. Gee wizz!

That looks like the perfect zero for maximum point blank range if you consider an 8 inch diameter circle as the vitals (Heart/Lung area). Never more than 4 inches above or below the line of sight out to about 325 yards.

I would still shoot it at the longest distance possible, not just 25 yards. If you could shoot it in 25 or 50 yard increments out to 325 yards you would absolutely know where it is hitting. This might take an hour of your time.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I am 1.5 inches high at 100, dead on at 200, 7 inches low at 300. 130 grain out of a 24 inch barrel.

I sighted mine in at 200.

Cool. How many shots do you take when you sight in that far?

Or did you mean on target? Now, admittedly this isn't perfect but that is the best I could do using sandbags and a 3-9x40 scope.

Any practice shots I take at greater distances are as much if not more to verify the accuracy of the shooter as they are my rifle.

Another reason why I like to optimize my sight is for new hunters I take out. All they have to do is keep it in the fur.
Feeder 1 is 196 yards away feeder 2 is 110 the road is 300 yards , All you got to do is pick one and keep it in the fur. Sometimes I get a 2fer.
