Well- got here Saturday afternoon , started hunting about 2 pm. All public/ wild birds- first 2 spots we put up 10 roosters and prolly 20 hens. Killed 5 roosters. We had time for one more spot ( honeyhole) that is a big property not overly high and thick- surrounded on three sides with crops- we always kill several birds here. Saved it for the last hour, when they fly back to roost. Pulled up and didn’t recognize it cause it was cut shorter than my lawn!!!! …. Sad. Cover looks good overall( much better than last year). We’ll see what tommorrow brings…..

Our first full day today. Sat in the truck in the dark for 30 min, full of anticipation at another spot we ve done well
At in the past. Nothing. We hit quite a few spots moving north as we went. By 1 pm we were 80 miles from where we started and hadn’t even seen a pheasant! I never seen so many bird hunters either!! So many folks hunting public - I finally told my brother- let’s get on the black top and haul the mail back to where we started yesterday.
We hit a public field- end up killing a rooster a piece in the 1/2 hr we were there. Then we quickly go to another field down the road( where we got into the 10 roosters yesterday). We ran the perimeter the last 45 minutes of light and kill 2 more roosters and put up 3 hens. These fields were super thick- my young female found all our birds in that thick mess- very pleased with her today. We didn’t realize how lucky we got finding an area that had a good hatch. Real spotty to say the least. All the roosters we harvested were young birds. We’re gonna give it a go in one more field tommorrow , then head home.

I used to go and hunt on Fort Leavenworth with 3 men I served with. A mini reunion, now I am the only one left.

Our SD trip was cut short by that huge front that came in mid morning on Thursday. Woke up to a 30-50 mph constant wind with snow on Friday so we decided to drive closer to home and hunt Kansas on Saturday-Sunday.

Never been to either State before and consider myself to be novice when it comes to upland hunting.. Came across 12 total pheasants in Kansas, 10 hens and we were able to harvest 1 of the 2 roosters we encountered. Had a total of 4 covey rises 20+ birds in each rise and we were able to harvest 10 birds.

We were with two old timers who weren't as eager to hunt hard and the dogs we had at our disposal weren't the best (one guy will need warm tea and honey for his voice to recover). We saw lots of competition, I thought the habitat looked good, lots of thick grown up cover but it did appear to be dry overall. We were checked by the area game warden which threw the old timers for a loop haha (claimed they had never even seen one in the area. I seem to get checked no matter where I go so it doesn't bother me). Big bird hunter himself who said he doesn't get mad at the pheasants until December and primarily hunts private.

Being born and raised from Texas and hearing my grandfather talk about his younger years chasing quail all over the Stephenville area I was surprised when the GW and several other hunters we encountered weren't all that interested in quail and were looking for Mr. Rooster..

We hunted in the Southwest zone. I hope that isn't sharing too much where I'm admonished by someone.

We've opened bird season on the same southeast KS farm for the last 40 years. Back in the day it was 20 covey days and limits.

Moved 2 covey saturday and 2 covey sunday. Only shot 3 of the covey and killed total of 7 birds. Could have torn up two of the covey as they lit in short grass, but that's not how we roll.

Great time spent with old friends.

We went to our last spot yesterday morning -we were going to get on the road after this. We put up 2 roosters about 2 minutes apart in the first 5 minutes into the field. My brother knocked one of them down-I didnt even get to shoot cause they banked left and his big head was in the way! Lol. I was thinking this field is going to be great-wrong...we pinched 3 hens in the end. Not satisfied, we decide we are going to go to one of 2 fields about 10 minutes down the road that I havent hit in about 3 years. One of the fields had a group pulling a trailer of pointers so we opted for the other.
This is to be our last spot. We get out of the truck, I was still collaring one dog, and the other two are pointing 50 yards in front of us. We scramble over there-big covey gets up.1st covey I shoot at on this trip. Dogs are frantic looking for downed birds and my little female points agian another 60 yards in-I'm thinking its the rest of this covey so I load up the 6's and walk over. 4 pheasant get up -1(only) rooster in the bag! the dogs go another 100 yards and point several more hens strung out in a 50 yard stretch. insane!! Things finally settle down and we are trying to pinch birds along an edge. We get to the corner at the other end and put up 4 roosters -we kill one. We shouldve done better here. We loop the property-put up 1 more rooster, several more hens and 2 more covies of quail. We felt blessed to finish with a great field!
2 mornings and 2 evenings in 3 days of hunting, 2 guys with 3 shorthairs on public-we finished with 5 roosters a piece and a handful of quail. I've been following the S D harvest reports, we are in the 90 percentile...nows the time to hit SD...stay tuned!! [Linked Image]

I got back from Kansas yesterday. We were up around dodge city. I never seen so many hunters!!! Me and my brother got there on a Thursday night and scouted all day Friday. The place we picked out for the first morning, had about 3 other groups show up as well. We started off good on Saturday, but Sunday was a different story. Had 2 fields across from each other and at daybreak, we could hear roosters cackling everywhere. Only managed to get one rooster to get up. Told my brother it might be better if we start planning our hunt around Thanksgiving weekend and avoid the crowds.

The white one is my young dog-stubborn and free spirited ! I see something in her though. If look carefully, you’ll see a check cord in the grass…
The tall liver dog next to her is a well greased machine.
