Hey guys,
I've lost 2 traps recently when the baling wire I was using to secure the traps broke. I was wondering what kind of cable/wire yall use to secure your traps? Thanks

That's my $.02. Here's you're change!!

Get heavier gauge baling wire or order some from a trapping supply house. 14 or so gauge baling wire is not quite heavy enough for coyotes.
If you can stake them down then heavy duty J hooks/ swivels and #3 chain work well on the trap.
Spouse uses the heavier gauge wire for drags.

Always secure any trap as if you are expecting a t rex or a sasquatch
to step in it. Even the most docile appearing animal can thrash around like
you can't believe.
Years ago when I was using the live trap cage type traps, the coons and possums
would smash around inside and bend the pans and coons will
barrel roll the trap and try to get the doors to flip open.
I seldom stake out a foot trap anymore. I use snare extensions or
wolf fangs or an old truck brake rotor as a weight/drag with extra chain
Even my rat traps and gopher traps have chain or cable on them.
The other predators will carry off the animal in the trap if unsecured.

Good Luck

This.

I use chains on all my traps. When I am using wire it is just a backup in addition to a stake or drag. I even started adding chains to my dp traps.

I used loop chain with a swivel added so it would not get all twisted up, snaps on both ends. Buy it at a hardware store by the foot.

Years as in decades ago we used to make our chains out of baling wire. This is an example of they were made. Being kids, we did not mind since the construction was cheap. My Grandpa had a jig, that we used, 2 pegs about 3" apart, double wrap the wire around the jig, then wrapped around the center from each end. Ours were a lot longer than these.

Should have also posted that the best advice I ever got was to add a
quality swivel to your trap chain. Animals can roll and roll and get the
chain twisted up and break a weak connection or get the chain twisted
up and get leverage to wring themselves out of you trap or break a
weak connection point and run off with your trap.
I use the MB swivels. About 50 cents versus losing a $15.00 + trap

7X7 3/32 cable to a wolf fang. Swivel for sure. You won't lose any more.

About all I ever used baling wire for was connecting direct to posts or trees, and even then I'd double it and attach it to a swivel on the end of my loop chain that was attached to my trap.

I do like the earth anchors if the soil's not too rocky or hard.

If it's hard rocky ground, I'll use an old truck brake rotor
It's heavy enough they won't up and run away with it, but it's
got enough give that the animal likely won't be able to jerk loose.
The commercial drags are ok, but work better with soft ground
so they dig in, and they need a goodly length of chain to
work right
