Hey THF’ers,

I was lucky enough to get drawn for archery to hunt the Bahia unit of Laguna Atascosa. The dates are from Feb 4-8th. Funny thing is I accidentally applied for this unit, don’t remember even clicking the box. I’ve been a rifle hunter and I’ve never handled a bow. However, due feeling like I won the lottery, I went out and purchased a crossbow. I’ll be hunting with the Ravin R10 and I’ll be taking it to Texas Archery in Spring to have it sighted in.

I’d appreciate any wisdom that you could bestow upon me. I’ve done a bit of research and it seems I’ll need a 400 grain arrow but I’m totally overwhelmed by all the different broadheads out there. Any suggestions? Spoke to someone at Texas Archery and he said while fixed blade broadheads are ideal for nilgai, it’s hard to get them to shoot consistently from a crossbow. I’d appreciate any insight here…

I understand the Baha’i unit is basically one big open space with not much cover. I intended on finding a game trail close to some cover and just sitting and waiting. Any tips for burning this area?? Any tips on hunting nilgai in general??
I’ve read that they are very skittish and have amazing eyesight hence my sit and wait approach. I’ve also read that they are very wary of ground blinds that aren’t established.

Anyway, if anyone is also hunting the unit during Feb 4-8th please let me know. I don’t mind lending a helping hand if needed.

Any other advice is much appreciated!

A real hunter never returns empty handed. Spending time in the wilderness temporarily satifies the soul, but leaves us longing for more.

Congrats on the draw. I be down there right after you for the shotgun/muzzleloader hunt. Never hunted the Bahia unit so no help here.

Got drawn for this hunt last year. Saw a lot of animals but they were roughly 400-1000 yards out. Good luck.

Thanks man, looking forward to it. Heard it’s best to let them come to you instead of trying to stalk.
