I’ve been thinking about picking up a 16 inch lever gun, not decided on caliber but anything over .30cal will require a new suppressor purchase which I’m not against.

I don’t care about iron sights, I’ll run a low power variable optic, planned use will be under 100 yards on whatever crosses my path and may get used with the thermal and subsonics.

The dream gun is a BigHorn Armory Model 90 in 460XVR to compliment my revolver, but a $3,500+ price tag and 12+ months of waiting doesn’t sound appealing.

So who has a 16 inch barrel lever gun, what caliber, and do you like it?

Had a 16" Marlin 30-30 for years, iron sights zeroed at 50 yrds. Very handy/snappy rifle that always performed well from the truck or buggy up to 100 yrds.

Rossi R92 in 45LC, had one in 44 mag too. Not sure you could thread it for a suppressor though.

I have a few Marlin youth model 336s in 30/30 and love them. One has Skinner sights on it, one has a red dot, and one has an old US Optics low Power Scope.

Been thinking about having a Marlin 45/70 cut down to 16.25".

That’s what I’m leaning towards. Even looked into the 444

I have/had 16” levers in .357, 44 Mag, 45 Colt, and 45-70. My favorites are easily the .357 and 45 Colt.

I’ve had 44, 45, 35 Remington, 30-30, and 45-70 in 20” barrels. The only 20” that I’ve kept is the 35 Remington and only because it has personal context.

Once I concluded that a lever action will never be a long range gun it was easy for me go with the shorter barrel. It’s easier to carry and quicker handling in tight quarters where I find myself with these guns.

The 44 Mag and properly loaded 45 Colt are serious guns at a 100 yards. I’ve flattened many pigs and a few deer at 100 yards with the 45 Colt.

Another argument for the pistol caliber rifles is 8-10 round magazines vs 4-5 in the big boys. YMMV

I run a suppressed 357 marlin I chopped to 16". Probably my favorite gun. I'm going to thread my 30-30 next, but I want to convert it from a barrel band to mag tube hanger style and cannot find the parts since marlin changed hands. I'm probably going to chop it to 18" as well. I have a 16" 30-30, and it just feels too stubby.

I know nothing about 16 inch lever guns. What is it that you guys like about them?

I have had several and am down to one after giving a nephew the Winchester 44 Mag. I have had a few different ones over the years but my all time favorite is a Marlin 1894 357 Mag. With good loads I am as comfortable out to 125 yards with it as any other rifle I own for deer and hogs.

It would seem a 336 Marlin Black is the most practical with your current stamp situation.

Supers or subs 30/30 is a proven killer to 100yds

It can thump hard with lighter weight modern copper solids & it’s obviously very quiet with subs.

I’ve got a high mount nv capable red dot on mine along with an MI railed hand guard and it’s a cool night gun to use with passive aiming or with a laser.

I’ve got Supressor capable lever rigs in 38/357 & 44mag as well.

If you get it canned up DO NOT pull out the 38/357 lever at any picnic etc until the ammo shortage is over. Every kid and wife in the area will want to run a mag through it on steel targets. I have never seen a rig get so hot you can’t hold it by the hand guard on a lever gun before 😂

FWIW, there are now some good options for form1 Supressor stamp products designed for PCC calibers up to 45LC.
They’re relatively inexpensive and highly effective but the best part is the 3 week turnaround beats 6-15 months of a form4 stamp

I have a Marlin Guide Gun with an 18" barrel. 45/70 with Skinner peep sight. It has a ton of whallop on both ends! Super accurate. Even with peeps and failing eyesight, I can hold a roughtly 3" group at 100 yards. I love, love, LOVE that gun....but, it gets very little use here in TX.
The good: very light and easy to carry. Quick to the shoulder for snap shots, and very accurate. You hit something, and it WILL fall down. I like to carry it when still hunting and stalking where I hunt in OK. No sling, just carry it by the reciever. Adding an optic would take this positive trait away. It is great for thick woods where you will almost never have an opportunity for over a 100 yard shot.
The bad: Load development really sucks. It will beat the snot out of you at a bench. Rainbow trajectory, I won't even try anything much past 100 yards.
It shines a a brush gun. If hunting from a stand, I will choose a different weapon.

brush gun definition - easy to carry, quick to handle, enough power to drop your quarry quickly so you won't have to track in the thick stuff. Even a big heavy bullet won't hit twigs and branches and still go straight.

I have owned Marlins in the past and one Winchester (.45 Colt) with 18/16" barrels.

For me lever actions work best in pistol calibers.

My current 16" lever is a side-gate Henry in .357 Magnum, and it has proven to be a good gun. My eyes are not as young as I (think I) am, so it has a little reflex sight on it. We get along great this way.

My great uncle gave me this 71 Marlin 30-30. As a kid I thought this was the coolest rifle. A few years ago he gave it to me. I never hunted with it. Always over thought the 30/30 vs other rifles I have. I felt a little guilty for not taking it out. Out of the blue, last week my uncle called to see if I have broke it in. That kicked me a little to get out in the woods. I killed this buck, for him. Went to Kubys and will give him all the meat. Also killed 3 hogs.

I was very impressed with the hard hit of this bullet, from about 90 yards.

I have a connection to this rifle, since we were both made in 1971. Find a year important to you.
Either 30-30, 45.70, 357, 45L. They are all good.

Have a few 16" levers; 30/30, 357, 22lr, 22mag. My favorite is 308MX, gets the same velocity as a 24" 30/30 with 160 grain projectile.

16” LTS 30-30. I have many 444’s and 10 lifetimes of ammo, and 20 more lifetimes of reload components.

Thanks but I kill more stuff with 444 across many diff states than I do with a 30-30. I’m hoping when we get the “greenlight” I can stop a Subaru with Biden/Harris stickers in its tracks too.
