We started the 2021-2022 season with a duck arse whooping. Not a lot of ducks but my nephews are crack shots. Not many birds made it out of the decoys. Not only are they crack shots, these boys were raised old school. They work hard and hunt even harder. We put in two 10 foot by 40 foot porches, one front and rear of the island house.

I am blessed beyond measure! Most here know what I have been for the last 33 years. I can be a real smart arse jack [censored] when I have a mind to it. I give them boys a ration of crap and they just laugh it off. They are learning to give it right back as well. What I don't do is talk smack about their shooting abilities, that would be just plain foolish on my part.

We hunt the open bay. Just down the way at a very large marsh it sounded like a war zone.

Good on you, no self respecting southern cabin builder would construct a cabin without a big front and back porch. Go the extra mile and screen them in. We had them on our north Florida cabin. Good memories. Mostly I remember getting yelled at for slamming the screen door... Everytime I went in or out. It's kinda a right of passage for young'uns.

It's starting to look like a cabin now. Course, you could stop and brush it in and pass shoot ducks from it...

No matter how high a duck flies a hammer still breaks a window.

I don't believe I will screen in all the porches. If I did screen them in I would be replacing the screens every time a hurricane hit the island. Port O'Connor is a target for hurricanes. The one we had 2 months ago ripped up one piece of tin on my barn. Not sure how it got it because the part that got destroyed was 3/4 on the roof and 1/4 on the wall. Its a carport on a slab. What makes it odd is that piece is on the opposite side from where the high winds were coming from. If anything it should have been the windward side. I for one know exactly what being yelled at for slamming a screen door is all about. Every time I got to the homeplace and hear that same sound of the screen door creaking, I can hear my mother yelling "Don't you slam that door".

Anytime I get to hunt with these men, is a great time for me. I had just about lost all sense of hope for the generation their age. When they became men, they gave me some hope for our future. Hope not only for the future duck hunters but hope for the country.

I don't guide any longer. Brandon Kendrick in Port O'Connor is your guy. If anyone is on birds, it will be him. He is on here every now and again as well.

I originally began the island build so as to guide on the island. Second thoughts have since changed my idea of why I am building. I will probably head down to the house at the beginning of the split and just stay through to the end of season every year. If we buy a ranch in Rocksprings then I will be hammering the deer for the first part of the season and ducks the rest of the season. I don't want to turn my life's passion into a job again.

He’ll take you out but you have to give him two days of framing labor per 3 hour hunt.

Potentially in. Been meaning to learn a new skill.

Good job, Wal and boys.

I am always happy to see an update on your build. That is really awesome.

This has always been my dream, build a cabin in the wilderness and hunt out of it for weeks on end.

I have dreamed about a place like this my whole life as well. What made it all happen was a cobalt blue bottle about 2 feet high. When I found out about the island I went to visit a friend of a friend on the island. He walked me through the whole process. Meanwhile my wife went for a walk on the beach. She was gone for a couple hours so we went to pick her up in my new friend's UTV. My wife is an avid arrowhead, treasure,....hunter. It can be the most odd of all odd pieces, if she likes it a little, she loves it. When we found her she was sitting in the dunes wrapped in her coat and clutching this tequila bottle from who knows where in the world. She looked me right square in the eyes and said "We are buying into this right now". She found that bottle and could have been a bundle of cash, it would be the same for her. So here I am 5 years later and full steam ahead.
