Sometimes and sometimes not.
If you find yourself feeling useless, remember it took 20 years, trillions of dollars, and four presidents to replace the Taliban with the Taliban.
Sometimes the Universe puts you in the same situation again to see if you’re still a dumbass.

Wait 15 minutes. The young ones at least often come back. Shoot Mama first.

I've seen them come in after a hog is down and I've seen them stay back and then leave. I always drag the dead hog out from the feeder area and then wait for more.......

I can only recall one encounter where a deep sleeper caused new arrivals to be wary. Most don't care as long as he's not bleeding all over the corn. Charlie

I think the biggest factors are range conditions and hunting pressure.
With low pressure I have had several groups of hogs where you shoot the first and the others dont even leave also where they leave but come right back out. High pressure they get pretty smart.

Now coons, I've seen coons try to roll a dead hog over to get at the corn.

First day of the deer rifle season last year, I snuck into the blind early in the AM only to find a sounder literally parked under the feeder waiting for it to go off. About an hour before legal shooting light (but with plenty of moonlight), I spotted one moving up the hill a bit and thought "if I shoot this one, maybe it will scare the rest of the sounder but still buy me time for some deer to trickle in later". I shot it, dropped it, then starting getting texts from the peanut gallery questioning and making fun of my early shot. As I texted to explain that I hadn't shot a deer but rather a hog, I look up and there's the whole damn sounder back under the feeder, oblivious. Now I'm getting mad, so I shot another one that dropped right next to the first one. Sounder heads out, and here I am texting again to explain my second shot and bear further brunt of bad jokes. I look up once more, and a lone hog from the sounder comes back and starts sniffing the two dead ones. By now my hunt was shot (literally and figuratively), so I opted to drop the third one. That was my opening day morning hunt!

That is an amazing, interesting and very funny story about your first day of rifle season. Many thanks for sharing...and for posting pictures to boot.

The best laid plans of mice and men, right?! Well, at least we got good meat to bring back! Bottom line is, sometimes a shot will scatter them to the next two counties, other times they'll come back. As you can see, I wasn't shooting a suppressed rifle and that .270 makes a thunderous crack each time. You just never know how hungry or obstinate they are, or how they will react to a shot.

Sunday night I was just taking aim on a doe and had a sounder come in. About 8 little pigs and 2 big ones brining up the rear. The two big ones went straight for the doe I was about to take and ran her off. Now I'm mad, so I dropped one of the little ones, just because he had some cool colors on him. Pigs took off but stopped on a dime about 30 yards away when they came across some other corn I had thrown. This time I waited for 2 to get in a line and dropped the two big ones. The rest scattered and didn't come back. More pigs came in right before dark and I hammered another one, so it was a productive evening from a pig perspective.
But to the come back questions, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. The little ones are particularly dumb.

Over the course of the night I shot 16 (recovered) pigs within 150-200 yds of this wallow and feeder behind it. After dropping a sow and a couple shoats in the wallow that was already full of boar blood I collected another handful of shoats from the brush directly around it. Evidently they didn’t want to move off and didn’t want to come back into the shooting gallery so I flushed them like quail and kept hunting them through the morning. The trail camera picked up hogs in the wallow when I had close to 10 stacked less than 50 yds away. The boars checked the carcasses of other boars. The sows and shoats stayed a bit off from the bigger boar carcasses. Maybe 15 yards from where these guys were laid out. I don’t know if it was fear or if it was just that the corn was on the other end of the wallow.
