I own dogtra ones, and so far they work every time. A friend has DT ones. I like them a little better, but not enough to replace mine. I bought a cool releaser for working STF. It’s very quite, and looks like a small covey rise.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

I pick them up and throw them.

I bought a remote launcher a couple of years back. Worked the first time I launched a bird. After that, my dog was onto it 100%.
I returned it. They work for a lot of folks though.

I used tip ups similar to these for planting birds. You can probably make your own much cheaper. https://www.gundogsupply.com/tip-up-bird-releaser1.htmlhttps://www.lcsupply.com/products/lcs-tip-up-bird-releaser?variant=23615718850660I stake the check cord when the pup goes on point then walk ahead step around like I am looking for the bird to flush, then release the live bird by stepping on the tip up. And shoot the bird or not depending on where I am in training. I progress to removing the check cord once the pup is stead to wing and shot. I sometimes used two or three tip ups at one spot so I can create multiple flushes. The only time I use launchers is during training for waterfowl retrieving or retriever hunt tests.
