Gene and Barry Wensel are two of the greatest hunters to live in a modern era. They consistently kill large trophy bucks, all with Traditional Archery equipment.

Came across this article the other day and thought it was worth sharing. I won’t say I agree with all of it, but I don’t disagree with much of it.

BAMM! The nerve of that guy to dissect the issue and stick it in the heart. Absolutely great read for those with Patience and the ability to comprehend.

The first part was good, the second part was nothing more than an ad for the PBS. To be fair, i am like txtrophy on this one, dont agree with a lot but don’t disagree with most. I am one of those dirty non-disabled crossbow shooters tho…

An awful lot of true statements there, and a longing for the "good ole days". Brings to light the importance of good mentoring in our sport.

He's not wrong but he's also not right. A lot of it boils down to 'They don't do it our way so I don't like 'em.' He tries to make it about tradition and integrity but its a thin veil of his jealousy.

In all honestly there is nothing noble about hunting OTHER than putting food on the table. Trying to share that you are 'enlightened' or hunting for the right reasons or treating the animal with some self-engendered respect is a bunch of hoohaw to make it somehow seem more palatable.

You're. Killing. An. Animal.

That's all there is to it. Anything beyond that is your own pride coming into it. He's butthurt that today's hunter doesn't share his pride. He's right about efficiency-today's hunter doesn't want to waste time on his, let's say stupid, traditions that do nothing more than waste time and seek to make it more than it is. His piety and pride are a stinky cologne.

I don’t think Gene Wensel is jealous of anything. He’s killed more big deer than most have ever seen including one of the largest hunter killed whitetail in existence.

I share much of his perspective, though not all of it.

I'm with QuitShootinYoungBucks, and therefore probably inferior in the eyes of the pompous.

That and a few quarters will get him a cup of coffee. If you measure a man by the size of his deer there sure are some HF owners on here that should be the emperor of Texas.

I re-read the article and I think I'm even less impressed now. If you changed the topic to education or racism or any other hot liberal topic, he would sound just like them. Just at pious, just as prideful. Trying to lecture all us hicks on how we're doing it wrong and we just don't get it.

I understand some of his angle. It's okay to mourn and regret that things have changed as much as they have. In our microwave society, rife with participation trophies, it is all about instant gratification and less about the process. But in your chase to make it more about the process, don't condemn those that would do it differently. Don't look down on and castigate those that would still participate, just at a different level. And for God's sake, don't relish in the fact someone was hurt using a weapon you don't think is worthy. What a prick.

Also, don't forget that you were part of the generation that raised the people that let it become this way. He should express some guilt about that it he wants to be honest.

I noticed his glee at someone losing fingers also. Forgot to mention it. Like him or not/agree with him or not, that sentiment is character revealing.

He is getting old and dreading the end. Now he is trying to make himself feel better reminiscing about the "good old days". Trying to tell us how the world is going to hell in a handbasket.

One more point: Gene and Barry Wensel’s video titled “Bowhunting October Whitetails” is credited by many to be the catalyst that kicked off the hunting video boom and as a result put the commercialization of hunting into high gear. Many others argue it was Fred Bear’s videos that actually lit the fuse of the mass commercialization of hunting.
Like Mr. Wensel, Bear also lamented much of what was taking place regarding hunting’s commercialization at the end of his life.

All of which seems very odd given that both men actively sought to commercialize their own hunting exploits. In fact, turning their own hunting adventures into dollars through the sales of videos, books, and gear is how they spent most of their lives.

I’m not knocking them, but they are/were a kind of odd pair to lament the commercialization of hunting.

Sounds like he is butthurt and believes that there is a right way, a wrong way and "MY" way. Those brothers consistently killed a lot of "large trophy bucks" because they lived and hunted in an area that consistently has "large trophy bucks". You can't kill them if you don't hunt where they live. There are many really great hunters who know how to hunt game anywhere those hunters go to hunt. They still can only hunt and kill the size animals that live on that land they are hunting. If those animals are subpar and not "large trophy bucks" in someone elses eyes, then are those hunters not on the "greatest hunters" list cause they did not kill "large trophy bucks"? I have a young cousin that hunts with traditional archery gear and made the switch a few years ago. He a young man and wanted the challenge due to his love for archery hunting. He kills animals he likes and hunts hard. He chose hunting this way and owns it. If his animals are not "large trophy bucks", are his accomplishments less than the butthurt Wensel brother? To much of hunting today is about "do it my way or you are wrong" hunting. Becoming an elitist culture.

I met the Wenzels at Shot Show back in the early 90's for the first time. If memory serves me correct, it was when they were doing something with Mossy Oak. We talked about getting them to Texas for a hunt but that never materialized. I haven't seen them in years.
Adios,
Gary
