Dug deep after thinking this would be a good year to go "old school" on opening weekend and pulled out the 257 Roberts Model 70 and the 300 H&H Model 70. The plastic stocks will have to wait until later in the season.... And I think it's time to rebuild the shooting bench...

We're going even older this season; all the guys threw in 100 bones and you have to use an iron sight lever action for all of November. Points based on myriad of factors; should be fun!

I did that last year. Took a doe with my Win 94 .30-30 that I hadn't used in nearly 40 years. Planning to do it again this year, maybe a pig or two also.

Thanks! The 257 was a collaborative effort between 2 friends of mine- one was a gunsmith and he did the barrel/action, and the stockwork- including checkering- was done by- of all things- a retired psychologist. The 300 is stock except the retired psycho did a light refinish on it. The gunsmith passed away in 20 and the psychologist had to stop working wood when he lost his eyesight to macular degeneration. So these are pretty special rifles and I hope to honor them this year with an animal of some sort.

That 257R is gorgeous. I have a Kimber Select in 257R with Fixed 6X Meopta scope. I may need to bust it out later this season. I'm actually going the opposite direction, fiberglass & a suppressor for opening day.

All great pics, particularly leswad. (What do you call that ring just ahead of the forestock?) I wanna .300 H&H in the worst way.

Creekrunner, this model 94 was built between 42-48, and is what they call a flatside. The ring is for your sling and looks like it was made from surplus WWII swivels.

Love it, beautfiul grain on that 257 too.
I'm going wood for opening weekend as well -- A Browning BAR Safari in 30-06 with an old school Leupy 3-9 in the crappy windage mount that JG hates (and so do I), same thing I took my buck with last year

I have a 1951 Marlin 336SC .30-30 waffle top with a '50's Redfield peep sight that would fit right into that challenge.
Pass the gravy.

Plan to do same as last year culling doe’s with the Smith Corona 03A3 1942 vintage with Speer Hot Core’s loaded in 1972 the year I graduated high school. Shot 3 and a pig last year.

Glad your rifles like that load, Mine and my 7mm-08 hated that load when I tried it in them. The old light magnum loads shot as well as anything I ever reloaded for them but the superformance replacement was more of a pattern from it than a group like shotgun pattern.
I ask Hornady tech about it and he said his rifle does the same but put ammo from the same box in their test rifles and it meats the MOA expectation.
Just about all the rifles I hunt with are wood stocked boltactions, lever actions, 1885 or a Little Sharps single shot. I like old school
Might hunt some this year with a Mannlicher 1903 in 6.5X54 MS. That is old school as well.

Update- ended the season like it started. Watched a bunch of bucks but nothing spectacular. Late in the afternoon two boars came out so I picked the biggest and let one go. The 257 did what it was asked to do this season…

Took my new .264 Win Mag. Interarms Mark X Mauser action with Myrtle stock. Old school wood and steel. Shot this cull buck opening day and a decent Auodad a few weeks later.
