Talked with Alamo Precision in Ft Worth yesterday. I was wanting to put a new trigger on my 270. He said nobody makes a good option for the Model 70. Timney makes one but the Alamo guy is not a fan. i believe they use trigger tech. He also won't do a trigger job on the model 70 because he has to remove material from the trigger and he doesn't want to be liable.

Anyway, has anyone had a trigger worked on around DFW? Any experience with Timney? I think a lot of people like them. Other suggestions?

The model 70 trigger is so good that you don't need an after-market one. You simply need to have a gun smith work on the one that you have. A model 70 trigger job is not expensive or difficult.

I’ll see if I can get an answer. Have a buddy that is big time Winchester and I’ve shot one of his that’s had trigger work done and it’s fantastic. I don’t think his guy is in Dfw but I could be wrong.

He's correct about the Timney, it is nothing near the quality as a properly tuned factory Winchester 70 trigger.

We discussed building a 6.5-280 Ackley on a model 70 and he didn't have any qualms with it.

I installed a Timney in a Pre-64 Model 70 I had out this year in February.

While I had the rifle the trigger worked just fine. Unfortunately the owner passed away just a few months later, or I would would ask him his long term experience with it.

I put a Timney on a buddies rifle.
I would say the Timney was better than the stock trigger....By how much ?
if Trigger Tech makes a drop in ...I really like Trigger Tech but have only used them on R-700s

It can be done....BUT make sure ever works on it knows what they are doing. The model 70 is famous for 'firing' when you release the safety after a person (not knowing what they are doing) has performed a 'trigger job' on it.

Are we talking about a new M70 or an old one ?? There was a drastic change in M70 triggers about 2006. They are completely different! The “new” one, called the MOA trigger by Winchester, is an enclosed mechanism, much different than the old M70 trigger.

I have a Timney in a 2020 or 2021 model Model 70. I like it a lot. Especially a lot more than the adjustable trigger the rifle came with.

I also have a 1990ish Model 70 that I had a local gunsmith perform a trigger job. It is at least as nice as the Timney, But I am not sure the trigger systems are the same design (older v newer.

I'm happy with both the older model 70 trigger job and the newer model 70 with a timney

I have a pre64 and a late 60s and both have original triggers that were adjusted to about 2.5 #s and I’m no expert at all but they seem good to me.
Just remembered I have another m70 from about 1990 and same as above.

If I can’t have a trigger set at 1.5#, then I won’t use it.

These are excellent in the model 70, but they are spendy

Went by Alamo today. Had a new trigger tech put on my rem 700 adjusted to 2lbs. It’s awesome. The gunsmith adjusted my model 70. Took out all the play and got it to 4lbs. Much improved. Gonna try it like that for awhile.

I’d still be interested in an experienced model 70 gunsmith.

It's changed hands and I don't recall the current name. They had a good old gunsmith who was great with Browning and Winchester firearms.

Guy that my buddy used has passed away so that’s out. He did say you can adjust it and clean it up significantly without a gunsmith.

Last year I ordered a new trigger spring for my model 70. Was an easy swap and my trigger pull went from 6lbs to 1.5lbs. Cost was around $15
