I cut up big boards to make little boards for a hobby in my workshop. I always have sawdust so I started using it as a fire starter. When I get enough I put the sawdust into large coffee cans and add some kerosene or old fashion lamp liquid to make a moist mixture. In the house I have a small cast iron Dutch oven with a lid that I store it in next to the fireplace. I keep an old tablespoon in it to use when needed. When it is time for a fire I stack my wood with a little kindling and then put three table spoons of the starter on the ground under the wood and light it. Simple, no mess, and no cost other than the liquid.

For my friends that have fireplaces I always give them a can or two for Christmas. They love it or at least say they do.

We have access to a million plus pine cones. We melt wax, dip the pine cones that have acotton string for a wick tied to the pine cone. Use 1 pine come candle with some kindling and we have fire. Wife stores them on a 5 gallon popcorn tin.

This is a great idea. Our planer makes these bigchunks that I'm sure would doo GREAT with this process. Gonna have to give it a try.

Cabinet shops are a great place to get sawdust if you don't make your own. Offer to come in at closing time and sweep up in exchange for the sawdust. Bet they'll take you up on it.

Kerosene is all I've ever used. Diesel would probably work, but might be a bit smelly. DO NOT use gasoline.

Yeppers, works great. Learned this in Boy Scouts and have been saving it ever since. A couple years ago I read about dipping your balls (of dryer lint) in melted wax and placing them in empty egg cartons to dry & store. I haven't tried this yet, but I hear it's supposed to work really well. I've got 2 buckets full of lint saved right now, I'll try this soon.

Have dryer lint in BOB for fire starter, used to use sawdust mixed with old motor oil.

put petroleum jelly on the lint, store it in a zip lock bag, 100% guaranteed.

Thank you Sir, I'll try that.

I have a fireplace, but after Harvey blew my chimney off I said screw it. Just covered it up with the new roof. I regret doing that, love a fireplace.

That's what we've been using to start the wood stove with in the winter, works great!

My lint screen is big enough to roll one up. grin

Last year I bought a bunch of "Wet Fire" just because. Stuff is amazing as well. It only takes a small piece from one of the little packs to start a fire. I've only used it once, but it was wet & windy and I was impressed. I've got a bunch put up for the zombie apocalypse.

It's sooo cute. Isn't it cuute? grin

Great idea though. Seen it before but forgot all about it. Just light both ends under a Tee Pee of kindling, and then bigger wood of course.

I did that with cotton balls.

Lighter pine and aspen wood are great for kindling and start a fire pretty quick and hot for a good draw up the flue.
