I was going to hunt all public this year but scored a lease not far from there last week. I made one hunt last year in the area and it was great. That was the week of the big snow and freezing temps and it took us two days to get home. Any bird reports from down there?

There’s usually birds there when there aren’t any anywhere else. A slow year there is better than most places north of there in the state.

That's on the sand shield. Generally reacts quickly to any rain because of good perculation and forbs and pastures recover from dry quickly. We had an unusually wet spring and fall in South Texas and bird populations should be up. However, the state parks and wildlife survey has bird counts down but I suspect part of the problem is high grass muffleling the covey calls-- they do a whistle count. Just got back from my lease north of there --we finished with a 20 covey day. -- 8 in the am 12 in pm. It was really hot--88 in the afternoon. Drove back thru the sand sheild and it was unusually green. Friend has a deer lease nearby--sed he was seeing lots of birds.

Thanks for the report! I hope I can find the time to get down there and hunt as much as the dogs and boys want me to. I think it’s going to be a good year.

We're covered up with birds and grass not too far from there in Duval Co! Hopefully on the lease you got they have the ability to graze it. We are grazing heavy right now and have even brought in some mexican steers to help out. On some roads we are on our second mowing trying to keep up. Might take some wet cold weather to help lay down the grass but you're gonna be happy with the numbers regardless.

That is a great area for quail. Once had a day lease down there but no longer. Day leases in Texas are now slim to none.

Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

That is just a classic area for quail. A friend has a lease down there, and was seeing lots of birds. It seems the rain drops have quail in them down in that area, if it rains then you have birds.

If you have any of that "quail water" for sale-I'd take some off your hands for our place in the rolling plains! smile ani
