Deer season is coming and I will bring my son with me who is not really into hunting. He is 18 and in college and I was going to let him shoot a hog? He does not have a hunting license. Will there be any issues with the game warden if he does shoot a hog? Thanks,

No license needed on private land, with permission of landowner. I think a license is still required for hunting on public land.

This is correct. On PRIVATE Land...the stipulation is that Land Owner Consent is required. In which case both Residents and Non-Residents will not need a hunting license to pursue/kill Feral Hogs.

On public land or on private land (without consent) a hunting license is still required.

'Unfortunately' it is you that might be 100% wrong.

Dropping the requirement for a hunting license to pursue/take Feral Hogs applies only to Private Land AND with Land Owner Consent.

Public land or hunting hogs without land owner consent (private land) still requires a license.

So...until we know what the situation is....the Lad may or may not need a license.

Explain the needing a license on private land without landowner consent? If someone is on private land without landowner consent I would think whether they have a license or not is the least of their worries?

If you find yourself feeling useless, remember it took 20 years, trillions of dollars, and four presidents to replace the Taliban with the Taliban.

Sometimes the Universe puts you in the same situation again to see if you’re still a dumbass.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

You stated unequivocally (without knowing the circumstance) that @Mikei was 100% wrong. So your information/assertion also was 'wrong' (at the time). In the interest of keeping things 'accurate' I simply expanded on what YOU should have.

Easy. A person could be on the land with 'consent' but NOT have consent to shoot hogs. I.E. might be allowed to shoot, Coyotes, Rabbits, other....but not hogs (for whatever reason).

So two elements are at play.

1. Landowner or someone with authority to act for the Landowner must give permission to be on the land.
2. The same must give permission to hunt hogs.

Having satisfied those two requirements....a person (resident or non-resident) would not need to have a hunting license.

I guess we'll need to now denote someone as "100% wrong", "mostly wrong" , "kinda wrong" or confused2 smile .

I agree on private land a license is not needed to shoot hogs. Going on a hog only hunt, etc.

However... I would think there is more than a little risk to the other person if you are deer hunting and they are "with you" in some fashion and they do not have a license. How is the GW supposed to know he's hunting, but he's only planning to shoot hogs? If he has a rifle, it'll shoot either.

During deer season, I don't think it's worth the risk and the basic hunting license isn't much coin to fork over for the insurance.

GWs have an interesting job. Whether it is deer season or not, how do they know what you are hunting? They will determine what you are hunting by your actions and interviews. A license is a good bit of safety kit for a hog hunter to help speed the interview process along, but that is about it. I would strongly suggest the guy get a license, not because of worrying about what a GW will think, but just because he may change his mind mid hunt and want to take a deer or coyote along the way. It isn't that much money and the money goes for a good cause.

"I was just holding the rod officer". How many times have we seen that on the various GW reality shows? Charlie is most precise here. In a deer blind during deer season, not worth the risk.

Excellent question.

I would think that the requirement for Hunters Ed (for those not exempt) would still be in place. Hunting is hunting....even if a license is not required.

Not knowing the age of the OP's Son....but assuming he is older than 17, a Hunter Education Deferral could be purchased (if no time to take the course prior to the hunt) and the Son could legally hunt (if accompanied).
