I bought a cheap no name sandbag rifle rest and it leaked and was a mess.

Got a good one, as a result.

What fill do y’all use and suggest?

Wanna try something besides sand, perhaps…

You can go 'organic' and fill with something like rice or corn. You probably have plenty of corn already. Corn won't leak through small holes. grin

I used sand, which made the bag (Uncle Buck’s Bull Bag) quite heavy, but since it stays on the bench and doesn’t get moved, the weight is a benefit, not a problem.

I had some sand in the kid’s sandbox, but it was damp. I decided, while the wife was off shopping, to bake the sand in the oven to dry it out. The plan would have worked if the cat hadn’t sprayed the sand at some point. When I baked it, there was an amazingly bad odor in the house. And then the wife showed up. That smell lingered for a very long time. So if you use sand, go buy some sand blasting sand like I eventually did.

She said the next batch of cookies had an odor, but if it did, the odor was faint.

Whatever David and Robert decide to use.

Been using some of their stuff for over a decade, on a weekly basis. Holds up like a cast iron skillet.

I use Eco Earth. It's ground coconut fiber that is used for bedding in reptile cages.

Good story 603. I had to laugh. It sounds like some of the things I do.

I recently bought my first high quality bag. Brand is Armageddon. It's filled with very small plastic pellets that weigh nothing. They sell the pellets in a 5 lb bag on their web site for $10.00. If I ever make my own bags again I'll buy their pellets, they're great.

The bag I've carried the longest that I still have, is tripled up Crown Royal bags. Fill one partially with the masonry sand, stuff it in another bag, then another. Fill it full, twist it off and use the smallest zip tie you can find. Tie the other bags off. I recently had to actually weigh it, right at 4 lbs. The Armageddon bag that is a little bigger weighs 1 lb.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Will start with a disclaimer that I’m talking about proper field use of a support bag. If you are talking about a green Caldwell “wanna be f-class but too cheap to buy a bipod” then just skip this entire post.

I carry an Armageddon Gear wax canvas game changer with Git Lite fill (can be bought separately.) The fill locks up tight when you use it for supporting the front of rifle or optics in a box blind. It’s also ridiculously light, so there is no reason not to always have it with you. At the time I bought mine Wiebad wasn’t making wax canvas versions, otherwise I’d have a Fortune Cookie with same type lightweight fill. Armageddon or Wiebad (Texas company) generally use 3 different weights, light, medium/generic, and sand/heavy. Just pick which is the best for your application, anything those folks use is going to be a good choice.

Quart size ziplock, fill 3/4 with sand, put in Crown Royal bag. Never leaks. Leave a couple in each blind--lasts many years.

I would not recommend food items like rice, corn, beans, etc., as rodents like them and you may find a bag that has been drilled through. Along with those, I would also not recommend kitty litter, as when it and the food items get wet, they can cause problems. I recommend the poly beads. They are cheap at the hobby stores, can get wet, and are light weight. We use them for front bags when not shooting off a bipod, and also in a squeeze bag in the back.

If I had to buy, I would and have used poly-pellets. You can get them at hobby lobby, but they aren't cheap. The advantage is they don't absorb moisture and are lighter than sand.

That said, I service silica based dehumidification units sometimes, and when replacing the media I will always keep it to fill bags. It works like the poly pellets and is free.

You can "wax your own" with a can of SNO SEAL and a heat gun on low setting. Only takes a few minutes.
