Most people have a set of shooting sticks that we have bought .Been making some for years now after reading an article in a predator magazine Get a couple 3/8 inch dowel rods from home depot or where ever .Drill a hole in both bout 3 or 4 inches down Not too big so it doesn't split Run a small bolt through one then put a couple washers on it then run it through the other Rod then a washer and nut Tighten it so it will open fairly easy. I drill another hole bout 6 inches up from the bottom of each dowel so when I get it set at the right height I tie a piece of nylon string through one hole to the other so they open to same height everytime. Works great in ground blinds or when sitting on the ground predator hunting. I leave a set in my blinds cause sooner or later you gonna forget to take them I made a set out of rebar. that will last forever Great rest for kids to use.

I made my first set of shooting sticks back in 2007 out of the seed pods stems from the Yuccas in West Texas. I still have this original set I made, except I broke one stick and had to replace it. I also have a set that is two sticks as wells as the 3 sticks. They are very light weight and sturdy when shooting. Killed a lot of mule deer off those sticks. Do not cost anything to make.

You should see what STX can do with cedar branches and bailing wire.

A couple of reusable wire twist ties are a very handy item to keep in your day pack. These are perfect for making shooting sticks.

There are a hundred other uses for them in the field. Hold a broken door latch closed on a blind. Tie legs together on a kill so it can be carried or dragged. Secure flashlight in a tree so you can field dress at night. Could go on forever...

I don't have a picture, but I made a set out of some 5/8" wooden dowels and a bicycle tube. The bike tube is flexible enough to allow you to spread the legs out, but still tight enough to hold the legs together and not flop all over the place when not in use. My buddy did the same thing with 3/4" dowels and it's MUCH sturdier than my 5/8" dowels.

Made some out of bamboo with heater hose on the ends for a rest. Light and strong. Lasted 20 years so far.

When I first started using digital night vision pig hunting, I just had a bipod on my rifle. Learned real fast that this does not work (on the ground), at all. IR reflection with grass & brush you can't see chit. I needed shooting sticks. My buddy that is a contract hunter and does depredation work on several hundred thousand acres, recommended this and made me a believer.

Go to Wal Mart and buy 2 long green plastic coated gardening stakes and a small cheap bicycle tube. Cut a piece of the tube long enough to tie the 2 stakes together tight at your comfortable elevation. Very stable, very light weight, quiet, and if you lose them you are only out a couple bucks.

You can also use a rubber belt for a vacuum cleaner to hold the shooting sticks together. I have heard that the PH's and trackers in Africa use a strip of rubber innertube to tie the shooting sticks together also.

These are sticks that I built ?????? years ago. Countless animals have fallen from them. Made from red oak and built to last. Made my longest shot on a coyote with them, 477 yards DRT with that purple Swift. They’ve been with me from Big Bend to Oklahoma Panhandle. They’ll be with me again chasing mule deer in a few weeks.

You can buy heavier garden stakes if you prefer, but these super light weight sticks will stabilize your rifle well if the wind isn’t too strong. Sticks in ground, plant your feet, take a deep breath, shoot. Quick.

All you need IMO.

Or spend a bunch of money, whatever you decide.

I like the quickness of two light sticks. I have carried aluminum tripods for miles in muddy fields and that got old. Way too bulky.



Moving things around, don’t judge. I normally let my cast iron stuff in the house have it’s own space.

I don't have a photo handy, but after a trip to Namibia, I made a set modeled after the ones my PH used. I bought oak dowels then found a piece of copper pipe repair sleeve that fit snugly over the dowels. Joined two dowels together through the sleeve and put copper end caps on the bottom of the dowels. I used a vacuum belt to join them all together. The pipe sleeve allows you to pull off the lower legs and shoot from a seated position when appropriate. They are light to carry and I have used them for pronghorn in Wyoming and oryx in New Mexico. In one instance, we had a couple seconds to set up a standing shot, in the other, we took our time setting up a long range seated shot. I know other products might be steadier or stronger, but these are light enough I will actually carry them.
