162 gr, 168 gr puts the 7mm-08 in a new category.

Going A.I. puts it in yet another category again.

I can't load the 162s long enough to get any velocity in mine, even with Staball. I need to get my gunsmith to lengthen the throat some. I not even close to mag length when I load to the lands.

I think both are outstanding Texans, Conservatives and Americans. Neither will be wrong

At the end of the day you can shoot from 110-160+ In 708, but if you shot 143 or less might has well shoot a 260/Creedmoor, and if you are going to shoot over 143 in a 260/creedmoor might as well shoot 7-08

Basically no wrong answer just capitalization/utilzation at a certain bullet weight.

I have two Creedmoors because of the OTC ammo choices/consistency.

No harm freerange, I thought it was funny too. I'm still of the opinion that the 140 accubond running 2800fps will handle 99.9% of any hunting situation you could imagine in the great State of TX. If you're just deer hunting, the accubond is obviously great, but a 120 ballistic tip running 3000fps is a deer killing machine, and not just little Hill Country deer. It'll handle any deer killing on the planet.

I have no doubt 140's and 120's do just fine up close.

My experience with the 162's 2600-2800 fps is they work up close, and far away, if needed.

Far away for me has been hogs and coyotes more than any other animals. The pronghorn was a far shot, and the 162 gr did a fine job.

And I have no doubt the 162's work, but if they're anything like the 130/140 ELDM's they're not my bullet of preference for shots 100 or less. The 140's do great out to 450 or so, which is the farthest I've shot a deer (whitetail does), and several pigs. I've not shot longer ranges with the 120, only to about 250'ish. IME, over a 50 year hunting "career", 99% of shots are under 300 yds. IMO, way too much is made of high BC's for actual hunting situations for medium/big game.

I agree which is why I don’t pay too much attention to BC anymore. I will say if I had an 800 yard range in my backyard like Jason, I would. Simply be too much fun.

Long range steel banging would change my tune for sure, and it really is lots of fun. The OP was referring to the 7mm08 though, and not the AI version, therefore as someone mentioned earlier, I see no reason for 160's in the 7-08.

Pronghorn was 689 yards out. Hogs and coyotes have been killed at 500+ yards, for several years. BC helps retain energy down range, which is what kills things.

It is missed, or ignored, that I do hunt and kill animals. The steel range is for preparation of that. For Pete's sake.

140 or 150 grain nosler partition sounds right up your alley.

I know it’s practice for hunting. I know you hunt. I’m just saying If you don’t practice consistently at those longer ranges, you should limit your shots and either get closer or pass.

From the hunting I have done, people I have talked to and hunting I have seen, it seems like the majority of the LONG hunting shots are intentionally made to be long by the shooter. Not saying it couldn't be beneficial to hunt long range, but by in large it is the extreme exception and not the rule from what I have seen.

I agree.
However, the 162 can do what the 140 can do. But the 140 cannot do what the 162 can do. grin

One of your best quotes, moderate speed, fairly heavy for cartridge bullets and eat right up to the hole. That's the 162, 168 in 7mm-08.

Depends on what type of country you're in. A whole lot of people that come out for the day were east, and south Texas hunters that changed to west Texas hunters. Going from Palestine to Childress, the lines of sight get much different.

And I think the hog problem all of Texas has is what is making people want to know how to hit them farther away.

I see guys going on elk trips. I've heard lots of times their guides, or buddies they are going hunting with have told them to be prepared for 400 yard shots. On flat ground, in canyon country, and in mountains, there are times you just cannot close the distance.

The right optics and ammo are just tools in the toolbox in case you need them. As far as game animals go, 85% of the ones I've killed have been inside 250 yards, and that's fine with me.

Depends where and what you hunt. Friend of mine in Idaho has a wall full of giant mule deer, not one was killed under 400 yards, with one just a touch over a 1000. Not saying he could or couldn't get closer, but the terrain he targets is burns, above tree line, avalanche shoots etc. Not 1oo yard hill country type of country. Plus shooting boulders up there is a national past time

My TX mule deer last year I stalked 4 times and couldn't get under 400, finally, I just drove my mule to him, ranged him at 250, and one high shoulder shot and he dropped where he stood. Never got out if the mule. Now if I was in a state like Okla Or CO, I’d had to eIther pass, or change calibers.

My comments are not intended to argue, just my experiences. Having hunted all over TX, OK Panhandle, and Eastern half of NM for 50 years, and guided another 150 hunters in these same areas, the kills I've made, or seen, over 300 yards are probably not more than 15 max, and that's almost 500 animals killed (not including hogs and other vermin). I disagree that an Amax, ELDM, etc will hold together as well as an accubond or partition at under 100 yards, especially at 50 and under which has happened more than once IME.

I have hunted that lease since 2007 and never had to shoot a deer over 200 yards till 2019 and it was just barely over 200 yards. Most of my shots were 100 to 165 yards off of sticks or the rest on the Ranger. If you can walk or drive you can get within 100 yards out there on that 70,000 acres. If you wanted to shoot a 1000 yards you could at any time you are hunting. Terrain can help or hinder you on a hunt...you just have to figure out how to hunt that terrain to make it fit you style of hunting.

Ive only collected 5 deer and hogs with my 7mm 08 from ranges of 30 to 175 yards. The 175 eldx has held together very well in all shots, even hitting shoulder. I do really enjoy hunting with it.

freerange, I have been loading the 150 partition in my dad's 280 rem for years, it has always been a great performer.

I'm a big fan of the 140 grain accubond in the 7mm-08.

i wouldn't hesitate to shoot a bull elk with it at or around 300 yards and under

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
