Kyles fire pit thread in DIY got me to thinking. Show some pics of your stone fire pits, not metal ones or stone bought. Looking for ideas to build. Please say if materials ere readily available and if they needed to be shaped or not.

Thanks in advance.

A lot of the stone fire pits you see built with new homes are made with large tractor wheels and then surrounded by stone once the wheel is in place. The reason for this is to keep the stone from getting to hot. If a stone has a air pocket in it the gas will expand with heat. At that point the stone either cracks or explodes. I have seen both happen around stone fire pits at deer leases. That’s also why stone ovens have never been very popular.

If you use fire brick on the inside then use whatever stone on the outside. The outside could be dry stack using an adhesive to stick them to each other. Or use mortar as traditional.

I was thinking of using one of these and surrounding with rock. That or putting metal ring in the ground with a rock border.

Ours at the property is built into the ground. Metal liner with stone border around the top and a grate on a winch and pulley.

I like the partially buried idea. Put some stone around it.

Hmm I’ve just always burned right inside the stone and never had a problem but don’t want a grenade around my families feet lol. Guess I’ll get some fire bricks and line the stone with them. Thanks for the heads up.

Not stone, but concrete landscape blocks. 10+ years and never a pop or spalding.

My cousin made his out of those and he hasn't had any issue yet, he lives up in Michigan and he will have some pretty good fires during "nice" days of old man winter.

A cautionary tale. This is on the first place we bought near Woodson in 2004. The wind was out of the north and I just wanted to build a windbreak for the fire. Both of my sons and I had just gotten out of the chairs and I took the picture. Right after I snapped the shutter one of the rocks exploded and cracked the back glass on my pickup.. Had it hit one of us an injury would definitely had been the result. I grew up in Throckmorton and have built countless campfires over the years and never had a problem before or since.

6’ diameter with Oklahoma stone outside, fire brick lined inside all around, 4 inch concrete slab underneath with fire brick on top. Going on 8 years old now, mortar has been redone once in that time.
