A little .270 came home with me.
She was kinda ugly, but I see some potential.
Stripped all the 70's funk off of her and tuned the trigger.
Found a DNZ mount and a Vortex Sonora ( both on hand )
Will make a trip to the range this week to see if the barrel has any life left.

Being the reloading nerd that I am...
I never really noticed that .270 has some real potential.
It looks like it can better the 6.5 Creedmoor, the issue being availability of components.
I can imagine a faster twist barrel and heavier bullets in my future...

I made it out to the range today Fri/5/11
I did my sight in of the 270 at 50 yds using some old Remington 140 Gr. Green/ Yellow box. It did shoot reasonably well and was able to put 3 in the center.
The group was prob 1 1/2"
I made some handrolled 140 Gr. Sierra Game changers with 55 Grains of Sta Ball and @100 yds the first 3 went a bit low but all 3 in the same hole.
I wish I had saved a pic but I was using the stick on splatter targets and I put one over it when I shot my 300 Win Mag.
The 300 Performed the same Hat Trick so I was pretty stoked that my handloads shot as well as they did
Good day shooting !

The 300 WM I shot today was an abused orphan also.
Not as bad as the 270 but it had languished in the previous owners closet for many years without any love.
Not knowing any better I thought a trigger upgrade would be nice on this one. Well the short story here is Savage has made so many changes the aftermarket items are a bit hit and miss.
I wound up having to machine some parts in order to get a rifle Basix trigger to function properly.
So word from the not so wise ...Just leave Savage triggers alone.
It did shoot some Berger 185 Jugs extremely well ...and that made my day ... but my shoulder ....

UPDATE
So I found a nice Stockys bedded walnut target stock for the .270
Arken ran a $100 dollar off and free shipping sale on their 34mm scope
so we now have new furniture and much better optics.

Come home today and the new barrel showed up...Gonna get exciting now!

What bullet you plan in on shooting with the 1:9 twist?

I saw a listing for a 170 grain nosler ballistic tip the other day… of course they were out of stock but I’d probably buy some if a 1:10 twist would stabilize them and I could find them.

UPDATE:
This re-barrel has given me some fits. As I was attempting to tighten the barrel nut the recoil lug wanted to move on me as I got it tight.
So I invested in a Davidson action wrench and a tool to locate the lug that bolts on using the front action screw hole.
Much better now... Gauges fit and function perfectly. Now on to bedding the stock !

Lots of calibers push bigger or faster (or both) bullets than the 6.5CM. The attraction of the 6.5 has to do with low recoil (to be able to stay on target and see potential misses for correction on follow-up shots), high-BC to still be able to reach out to 1000+ yards, and factory ammo that's good enough to do all of this without reloading. I know lots of folks who bought a 6.5, fell in love with it, and then found their way into reloading after realizing the potential for modern components.

270 loses out here on recoil. Long action cartridges almost always have too much recoil for only moderately-skilled shooters like myself to be able to keep the scope on target to see misses.

I just did a little remodel to the garage. It suits me for what I do. I wish I had a bit more room for a shop where I had a lathe and mill.

UPDATE:
Way back last year, when Black Friday sales were going on, I decided to buy an Oryx chassis. Mostly because I could save a bunch of dough and I was just not in love with the wood stock.
The drawback to the sale was I had to wait for MDT to catch up on their production. So 4 months later (Today) the Oryx finally shows up. I coated the barreled action in SOCOM Black and got all of it put back together.
I was also lucky enough to get my hands on some Nosler 150 Gr. 277 ABLR's (G1 of just under .600) which according to my load data should launch at about 2900 FPS. I think that's gonna be fun to see how far I can lob them.
Now gotta locate an AICS Long action mag...Hand feeding until then.
