Cold rain and spitting snow outside. The girls are hooked on soap operas, and wanted to eat leftover steak at 4:00. Told me to fend for myself. I'm a big boy, and can do that!

A Texas rose in the air fryer from a good Tex-Mex sweet onion, with hot dipping sauce. Gumbo, Tabasco, and saltines for the main course. Since I was waiting a half hour on the air fryer anyway, I built a Dutch apple pie (w/ shortbread crust) for them for dessert. There's a brand new vanilla ice cream in the freezer smile

If that sauce is like the outback sauce, could you share the recipe? Same for the onion!!! Looks great as usual!

Thanks for comments. I have to confess tho, that I hate Outback and have never had a decent meal at one, so quit going. Haven't ever ordered one of their onions, either but love onion rings.

The sauce I whipped up with siracha, Mayo, horseradish, and garlic powder. The onion I just cut and the dusted in half flour and half Bisquick, dredged in a beaten egg, the floured a second time. 350 for 20 minutes.

I came up with it on my own, and was pretty proud of myself. The wife just laughed at my cussing, and then said "You know there's an actual recipe for this in the book!!!"

When I was a teenager I worked at a couple different restaurants after school. At one restaurant the owner was an absolute AH mad at the world, and his #1 cook that I had to answer to was a flaming homosexual that liked to make passes at young men and say all sorts of inappropriate things. It didn't take very long for a physical confrontation to ensue resulting in my termination. I was bent over storing tubs of salad that I just prepped in the cooler, when I heard my last "hmn hmn look at that" comment. I grabbed a kitchen knife and went at him, I threatened to kill him if he said one more MF thing to me and I was not playing. Old man ran away like a scared kid. roflmao

Anyway, before all of that I learned how to make a proper blooming onion. I got good at it and then it became one of my responsibilities when customers ordered. We only used large 1015 Texas Sweet Onions, I was taught how to properly cut them and then soak in tubs of ice water. Then mix up the seasoned batter and double baptize when it was cook time. What I learned was the secret to a properly fried blooming onion was that you had to spin it in the air on the way to the hot oil. These were big fryers and didn't make much mess doing this.....but you can take an unspun onion and drop it in the fryer vs throwing it in there like a frisbee and set the two side by side, and see the difference.

I bet that battered they would be awesome. When it's this cold and rainy out, it's tough to keep my Dutch up around 350-370 with the little side burner in the grill, and I didn't feel like getting out the big kettle burner. That's what triggered the interest in the air fryer. Actually worked pretty good, but long cook time.

I've been looking at air fryers since their conception, still have never tried. I LOVE anything onion, but something changed with me years back. I can't do onion rings or tater tots anymore, makes me sick to my stomach & I dunno why. I WANT to eat them, but hail no with the sour stomach for 4-6 hrs.

Maybe I should actually try an air fryer for certain things? nidea

SB: My wife had to deal with the same thing, developed an allergy to them. She used to eat some onions, but they kept getting her upset, and finally had to quit them all together. That's a hard taste to give up, if you like them. Just look at labels, so many things are cooked with them. She has to ask in restaurants when she orders.

Many years ago, my daughter had her gall bladder removed, and she had to give up almost all fried or greasy foods, and most spicy ones. As a lover of French fries, tater tots, pizza, and Mexican food - she thought she was gonna starve to death. Took her about a year to find a combo of foods she can tolerate!! She loves her air fryer now, and they use it 4-5 times a week. Found the coconut spray works great for cooking her stuff.
