King Ranch, 24 3/4" Waterbuck, 80yd shot, 300 HAM'R 150gr SST, ran 20yds with a shoulder shot.

No he wasn't in a pen enclosure, the fence in the background is just a cattle cross fence!!!

Very nice representation of a Waterbuck. King Ranch has no high fences and as fair chase hunting as you’ll find in Texas.

if I'm using an 11.3 barrel, and will experience decreased velocities due to that, would I do better hunting with with something a little more fragile like a varmint bullet than a tough bullet? That principle seemed to apply to the blackout, and I figure a 16" blackout and an 11 inch ham'r are fairly similar.

I ask because I'm struggling to find the 130grn hot core in stock, and I have found some 125 tnt's at a good price. I mostly hunt smallish pigs (rarely see anything over 200lbs) and the occasional coyote/deer/dog/turtle.

You can find the 130 gr. Hot Core at Caliber Armory. $1.50 a round.

I've shot several dozen pigs w HAM'R loaded with 125gr TNT including one above 300#. It works fine for standing shots with some complete messy pass throughs on pigs under 200#. When they're running & the hits aren't always perfect I feel the bullet shows some weakness on the bigger pigs. I put 6 in my big boy before he laid there and let me deal the coup de gras.
IMO, the TNT are fine. My 135gr FTX effect wasn't notably better on pigs as they were still sucking up multiple shots that were less than perfect placement. Same w my 135gr bonded and 130gr HHC other than these punched through and exited almost every time.

I've also had some luck with 110gr VMAX in HAM'R producing results I'd never have expected on pigs. If you are considering TNT you may want to look at these as well. They're punching through pigs but they are not fur friendly on coyotes. :-O
I loaded some in .308 just to see if they'd disintegrate on the impact w hogs. I took a 200# at 200yds with the Amax doing 3K+ fps at the muzzle from a 16" bolt gun. He went down like a sack of bricks after an intentional shoulder test hit. He did manage to gain his feet within the first 30 seconds but only made it 7yds before tipping over for good.

I didn't have time to attempt recovering the bullet but it did it's job well enough to tell me 2600-3000fps it's still holding together & penetrating well enough to kill hogs reliably.

All of my experience with these bullets have been in 300BO so perhaps the additional 300fps makes a critical difference. From 300BO I found the 125gr TNT to be a great plinking round and small game. However, it doesn't get the expansion that other bullets are designed to do. It will do in a pinch, and a head shot is a head shot, but I would select a different bullet for hunting. Also, I am on the fence on using 110gr VMax. Again in 300BO, a friend shot a 150# pig in the shoulder....nice impact crater that didn't do much internal organ damage....pig would have wondered off and eventually died from infection/shoulder damage. A single shard of metal the size of steel pin punctured the heart. We found the pig 50 yards away.

I want expansion and energy dump. I enjoyed the effectiveness of the 110gr Barnes TAC-TX in 300BO ... I am hoping the 110gr Barnes TSX has same level of performance in 300HAMR.

I’ve only got one leg that works & I’ll never by as fast as that DJ fella so sometimes I just find a Rich looking spot and sit for a bit.

These stupid boars fell for it and just kept coming every time I hit the call.

I’ll probably be somewhere when I can call in sows and Sounders regularly

The smallish exit is from a 110gr vmax out of a 16" HAM'R doing 2640-2652fps mv . I don't know if it was caused from bone or lead exiting & it frankly doesn't matter to me.

I just checked my magazine notes & I didn't get to fill a pig in with the 3330fps load this trip.

The bolt gun pic above is from a vmax doing 2995fps MV from a 308. At 3K fps in the shoulder hit sample of one above it did not fragment causing a surface wound on whatever impact velocity it had at 200yds. Same with the other half dozen or so I've taken up to 50yds with the 2652fps vmax ham'r load.

Dzhitshard - Good to Know ... VMAX holding together and acting more like a TNT bullet than a fragmenting varmint bullet. I will load some up for testing .... got a stash of 110gr ZMax.

I know it’s a HAMR thread but I’m working a test on the 110gr VMAX to see what velocity it can handle before fragmenting on impact with 140#+ hog shoulder hits.

I’ve got progressive velocity loads worked up from 3k FPS - 3300 in .308 just to bullet test. From previous experience it had surface fragmentation issues at around 3350 on whitetail.

It’ll be a while before I have opportunity to shoot enough to get a real understanding of its limits but they’ve held together well enough at HAMR velocity so far.

I believe DJ has killed a mountain of peanut field pigs with them and it’s what led me to roll the dice loading a few hundred up.

I do know that They are rough on coyote furs though

Bill,

Any information you can share on the 125gr Controlled Chaos release?

I put 40+ hogs and a handful of coyotes on the ground last week with the 110gr CC and I'm still spitting feathers from having to eat all that crow.

They work as advertised. I'd be interested in getting 2-3 boxes of the 125gr to see if it may be a more perfect fit but I'm pretty happy with the 110gr.

I don't understand how they aren't shredding coyote pelts but are leaving 3" chest wall holes in big pigs I intentionally hit in the shoulder and popping shoats like water balloons. I just accept the black magic for what it is now.

I don't think there is a "single best", all of the following work well. Right now I'd pick the one you can get that shoots good in your barrel.

Lehigh Defense 95gr CC
Lehigh Defense 110gr CC
Speer 130gr HAM'R HOT-CORE
Hornady 135gr FTX
Speer 135gr HAM'R BONDED
Sierra 135gr HP
Hornady 150gr SST

The clarify on Mr. Wilson's list above. The Hornady SST you're looking for is the 30303 https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1010471181?pid=114443 They might as well be made from Unicorn 🦄 Horns in these current times. I've yet to try the 110gr VMax but keep reading Good things on here.. https://battlehawkarmory.com/product/hornady-23010-v-max-30-caliber-.308-110-gr-100-box

of the better bullet choices, are there some that perform better out of the 11.3" barrel? should I be looking at lighter bullets for as much velocity as I can out of the shortie? or a heavy bullet that seems to have less of a velocity loss from the short barrel? I'm read on some forums that people are having decent luck with the 125 tnt's killing things in the blackout. It would be convenient if they would kill hogs as well as anything else because they are cheap. But if they don't kill I don't want to use them on pigs. they can be paper and can rounds.

I just received a WC 300 Ham'r (ranger) 16" barrel and it is fantastic. I am looking to add a suppressor but am unsure of which one to get. I am trying to keep everything as light as possible. Is there one that is recommended that is best for this setup? Thanks a lot.
