I have a private lease but still take my rifles to a public range to sight them in and for all practice shooting. I do it out of respect and common courtesy towards the landowner and all others who live in the area where I hunt. The range also has a much better setup for getting it done right.

I'm not sure if it's allowed but I would not do it. I hunted public land back in the day and the last thing I would want is someone in there blasting away trying to zero their rifle. Just my .02¢.

Several of the WMA's I have drawn hunts on have had 100 yard ranges at the headquarters. You were encouraged to check your rifles zero, prior to your hunt. As far as general shooting anywhere on the WMA goes, I would think you need to ask the staff.

I believe it is not legal. I was told no target shooting on 3 wma places.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Depend on the WMA and if they are set up for shooting. Only one I have seen set up is Mason Mountain. They have a range right behind the bunk house.
Call and ask on any WMA before hand would be my suggestion.

For about $20.00 you can go to a range, walk up to a nice bench and target boards. Do that.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

If you live in/around Dallas there is a outdoor range in Garland very cheap.

Also if you live near a military base there is probably a range you can use for free, register your rifle on post at the visitors center and get it done.

Every WMA has its own set of rules. When you get the $48.00 hunt permit, you get a book with all the rules. Need to read the book for your area, its not that much to read but never saw one that allowed centerfire rifles so NO, Walking around on a WMA with rifle bullets flying would make me pretty angry, there are people there. The areas I bow hunt also have bird hunts, and people popping shotguns, shooting, not hunting, is rude to the people who go to expense to be there and hunt.

Probably the most irritating jerk on the planet is the guy that shows up blasting an unsighted in rifle during deer season on a WMA. Show some class and sight in on a range.
