I’m not attempting to preach to anyone but simply a friendly reminder this year about the safety of heaters in a blind especially if you keep the windows closed on cold days. Most modern day heaters have CO2 safety switches that shut them off to keep from poisoning you but some heaters simply don’t have them and anything mechanical can fail and in return it could kill you or a loved one. I’m sure some of you remember that I had a family member pass away last November from CO2 poisoning in a blind so it does and can happen to anyone at any time. All I’m saying is be careful with them and keep your guard up.

Propane heaters give me a headache, so I always open a blind window.

Good reminder. Thanks. I keep my windows open all the time (non-transparent windows) and the buddy heater still is fairly toasty, even during the 5 degree snow-pocolips.

Good reminder. Mine stay in the blind year round. Need to check them and fire them up next trip. And I always crack a window when using.

Although it wasn't a blind, I lost my closest childhood friend to carbon monoxide poisoning in a camper. He was riding ATVs in Colorado with a bunch of friends. First night of the trip, called his new wife and checked on their 3 week old son, went to sleep and never woke up. Authorities said the high altitude, sub freezing weather and lack of a monitor on the stove top, he was probably dead within an hour. The friends found him and said that the propane tanks on his TT were frosted over.

An attorney by the name of Hill died in a travel trailer that way, with a couple of hunting buddies, if I am recalling it right. He and his wife were one of THE first folks to "discover" Fredericksburg and started buying and restoring historic homes and buildings in the late '60s.

I was thinking about this just the other day. My home built blinds have lots of gaps around windows and door, but I still don't run a heater without a window cracked open. This year I bought a fabbed blind and it seals up tight so will definitely be careful running a heater in this one. Thanks for the reminder - in our area, we had three hunters die a couple of years ago sleeping in a converted cargo trailer and using a heater inside. Scary!

I have a little buddy heater. Not only do I crack the blind windows... but I also bring in a carbon monoxide detector. Perhaps it's a bit overkill - better safe than sorry.

Come to think of it, I do have a Mr. Buddy heater. I've used it a few times in Colorado, in the tent, to get dressed and undressed, and of course, to enjoy my coffee. 'Been hunting in Texas since '71. Never used a heater in a blind. But, technically, I am a South Texas boy. up

Walmart put the Little Buddy with O2 sensor on sale last week, less than $75 delivered. I ordered 2 because I know that sensor will shut off the heater long before the levels get unsafe.

I used a Buddy Heater in a tent last Fall. I cracked open two windows, and had a CO2/smoke alarm, plus a fire extinguisher. Just can't be to careful. Stay safe.

Good advice. Although I’m sure you meant CO vs. CO2.

One symptom of CO poisoning is an overly pinkish tint in your fingernails.

This is the one I am talking about, they call it a low oxygen sensor
