Was checking cameras last weekend and was happily surprised to confirm we have a red deer population at our lease in Young county. I had heard red deer were in the area but had never caught anything on camera. I only noticed when showing one of my buddies of these where a deer was stuck in the tree and he pointed it out! grin Any information/tips on red deer hunting would be appreciated!

Where are y’all in Young co?

Pretty common from HWY 16 north to maybe 380. Might not go that far, but based on how long they have been in the area and their range, it would not surprise me. Our neighbor to the south introduced them back in the day and subsequently took down his high fence some years later.

They will outcompete WT until the WT get used to them which takes several years IME. Keep a hand on their numbers (particularly the Hinds) if you want a successful WT program. The basically have a 100% fawn recruitment since the Fawns come out well over 100lbs. We hunt them Sept-Jan. Their rut peaks between In early to mid October. Two weeks ago was crazy for us. Dominant Hinds will form larger groups and control an area. There may be smaller groups of hinds outside the core group. Stags will stay in bachelor herds until the rut then travel to the hinds. We have seen stags on one end of the ranch one day and the next be two miles away on the other end of the ranch the next. Most fun way to hunt the stags is to locate them by their roaring and stalk in.

IME they taste better than WT but not quite as good as Axis...pretty good table fare.

Just my .02,

We have some. The new landowner has put them off limits. So now we just feed them. They are very good eating.

I'd love to see some where I hunt (Montague County). Mostly I see the landowner's longhorns (which are big pets).

I had some very good red deer burgers when I was in Scotland. Wouldn't mind bagging one and making my own, good luck.

If you more of them then keep them...I would shoot everyone of them on site if they were on my land.

He is not stuck up in a tree but standing behind it in chest deep mesquites. He is walking towards feeder in the first pic...by time stamp it is the next pic in sequence after that pic.

Def not touching the ground in first pic, but obv got out or there'd be buzzards picking at it. Crazy. Anyway, nice Hinds.

edit, on second thought, I thinks its just back a ways, optical illusion.

Well he does have 4' long legs, so they are on the ground if his body is barely above the tops of the low brush. He is not directly behind the tree but a bit behind it....Depth perception.

The feeder's legs are only 6', those specific hinds/stags legs are not 4'. I am no expert on red deer but I am almost certain this deer is in the tree.

That is a Stag standing behind that tree and/or in that low brush. Stags are much taller than those young hindes and they can't climb a tree. I was wrong on stating 4' legs but they will have 3' tall legs.
