Back in the early 90s I was riding the subway from the Upper West Side of Manhattan down to the Financial District late in the afternoon. It never occurred to me, but many of the train passengers are (or were at the time) students - middle and high school age. There were two girls about 14 or 15 who got on and one was blond. At the next stop a group of boys got on and started harassing her, calling her Blondie, getting in her space, and basically acting like depraved idiots. Well, being me, and blond, I got paternal and asked loudly what they had against blonds. And while not a huge man, I am wide enough and tall enough that I stood well above these punks. They all backed away and kept quiet, til we got to the next stop and they got off before starting to talk trash, flip me off, etc. Not a big deal, but the car was full, and I was struck that I was alone in telling these kids to back off, while everyone else on the car acted as if they didn't see a thing.
The mentality of big cities and the anonymity of the masses provides too much cover for uncivil behavior. We are even seeing it start here - I can't wait to get to my country place full time. Make perfect sense to me. You were an interloper. They are all locals or routine riders just trying to get from point A to B. They have become desensitized and/or have learned that their involvement only invites actions against themselves. They get no I backing from others so why would they help anyone else?

Let me throw this out there Philly is a liberal city, maybe just maybe they kept out of it because if they got involved they would be charged with assault. TX has or had a law that would protect you from BS like that. Sad, no matter what the reason was.
