I finally have the Wraith MAX mounted on the .223. I have a single box of Federal Fusion .223 (non-MSR) 62gr and it looks like it might be hard to get more. I have four boxes of Hornady 55gr Varmint Express but that doesn't seem like a hog round. Should I sight it in with the Federal and just plan to re-sight down the road, go with the Hornady since I don't care about recovery, or go another direction? I have several hundred rounds of 55gr American Eagle FMJBT as another choice and 300 rds of 62gr greentip. I know the rifle will stack the Hornady but have no idea about any of the rest.

I understand the don't care about recovery, but I like to find what I shoot. I also have some very big doubts about 55 grain varmint bullets. I shot a good size boar several years ago with hornady 55 grain v-max. I admit my shot placement for the bullet was poor, I shot at the center of the shoulder, it hit him hard and knocked him down, but he was back up pretty fast. After that I put the last 2 bullets I had into him, and he never stopped and I never found him or blood. Every shot knocked a puff of dust off of him so I know I was hitting him.

Also shot a big boar with a 90 grain speer hollow point as fast as my 270 win could get it in the neck, fell flopped got up and ran.

I'd take the fusion any day.

IME the Federal Fusion, MSR or non-MSR, are the same round. The Speer Gold Dot 62 Grain LE load is the same bullet in a nickel plated case. Any of these will shoot about the same if you can find them. If not, any 60 grains or heavier bonded or non bonded will work better on hogs than the Vmax.

SG Ammo has some 64 Power Point ammo which is their deer/antelope load. I've heard good things about the 64 power point on other forums,

for a standard cup and core bullet it isn't a bad choice

Find the ammo with the heaviest bullet your Wylde will shoot accurately and then shoot 'em in the neck, ear or eye socket. DRT.

A landowner friend of mine asked me to load up some .223 test rounds for varmints since all he had was 55 gr FMJBT. He was going to use them on coyotes. I loaded some 55 grain Vmax for him at approximately 3,000 fps. He ended up trying them on hogs when the opportunity presented itself. He had 10 kills on hogs ranging from 90-120 pounds over a couple weeks. All were shot at 75-125 yards.. One was a quartering shot through the shoulder, one was a broadside shot through the shoulder. Both shots broke the shoulder and did quite a job on the insides. Others were rib/lung shots of which a couple exited with a huge hole. None ran very far although he did place a second round in a couple for good measure. While not my first choice for hogs, I think the V-max is a lot tougher than we think.

I loaded some 64 grain Winchester Power Points for him to try too. I have not heard back, but like you I am assuming they would be a better choice, especially on bigger hogs. Interesting side, he was previously using an AR in .308 with mil surplus 147 gr FMJ and he said the .223 worked way better and follow up shots were so much faster when needed. Both rifles were suppressed with thermals.

The most devastating 22 caliber bullet that I have found is the Hornady 75 grain open tip match bullet. It's also the bullet they use in their TAP self-defense line. Use it in a 20in barrel that has the slowest twist that will still stabilize it and the damage is hard to believe when you see what it does. Be forewarned though, like all other 22 caliber projectiles it's wounding ability is heavily dependent on velocity. The shorter the barrel the less damage it does and the less effective range you have.
