I'm allowing 2 days of drive time there and 2 days back

Traveling Alone

No

No, there is a connecting flight which is what concerns me about my luggage

I've had two people tell me that and one sent over info last night....hearsay at this point but still.

Where are you going exactly? Guided or unguided?

Semi-guided whitetail hunt in Ohio.

Bringing my bow and wife is bringing her rifle. So two hard cases, two suit cases, then on the return trip hopefully will be traveling back with two deer racks and hides...I don’t trust the airlines with all that stuff. I have no aversion to flying at all, but it’s a lot of risk.

Gonna make the drive next week when it’s time to take off, not gonna gamble.

My partner flew up to BC and they lost his rifle and bag for three days and it cost him time on his hunt and probably cost him a mountain caribou.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Wise decision, and awesome that your wife is going with you. Good luck on the hunt!

Drive it. I've always enjoyed some alone time in the truck. Two 10 hour days is pretty easy and you get to see some pretty country between here an there.

I've been flying quite a bit since this past March and I can tell you that you getting there on time with all your stuff is about a 60/40 proposition. About 40% of the flights I've had in the past 7 months have been either canceled, significantly delayed, or luggage hasn't arrived the same time as me.

If it's something you have to be there for at a certain time, your best option is to drive it for sure.

I did the drive from Houston to Columbus for work last year twice, the first day wasn't so bad. It was the second day that kicked my butt from just being sore for sitting so long. I would stop pretty much every hour just to get the blood flowing again. I had never driven that part of the country so it was nice to see new things. I did drive as far as I could on the first day to make the second one a lot less drive time.

I’m in Ohio now. Drove here from Midland. I’ve done it from Katy and from home, as well. It’s not a bad drive.

worthless

Without a picture of the wife's rifle.

Enjoy the drive and the ability to do as you want on the way and not have to worry about all the things you need to take and bring back..

The airlines were bad even years ago. I used to fly a lot. Worse now, and potentially much worse. I have plenty of horror stories from air travel. Now, add mask wearing in the terminal and plane, hours of each, and hoping your flight is going to happen, and Dirty Harry asks “do ya feel lucky, punk”? I feel luckier driving these days.

But, fly if you want to. Just tell us later how it went.

Anything under 6 hours by car and I'm driving. Over 6, I'm flying 90% of the time. For the other 10%, it depends on how long the trip will be at the destination. If I'm going to be somewhere for 3+ weeks, I'm going to drive so I have a car and don't go broke on the car rental. If I'm only going to be there a week, I'm not doing a multi-day drive. And as other have said, the trip out usually feels short. The trip home sucks.

Thanks,
Rich

Just got back from visiting family in East Tenn. It's a 14.5 hour drive but I flew. Been sick with some kinda upper respiratory krap since I've been back. I'll drive next time. Just too many variables flying now.

I would drive. I’m heading out in the morning. 22 hour drive. Traveling with a hunting buddy and two bird dogs. Will hunt for two weeks and then drive home. We usually try to take the scenic route coming back and see some new country. Good luck in Ohio.

I wish. There’s some big deer up here. I’m up here for work.

If it's an option, I'm driving. I spent about 5yrs flying almost weekly, and I now cannot stand a single part of the process. Haven't been on a plane in about 4yrs and will never get on another if I can help it.

I am like most others here, I prefer to drive. I just got back from a Wyoming elk hunt and it was 1300 miles each way. I stopped off at my deer lease north of Childress the first night and then took two days from there to get to Pinedale. I got my elk early and had time to visit the Grand Teton National Park for a day. I am fortunate in that I am retired so I can come and go as I please without much of a schedule. I doubt I will ever fly again unless it is for a hunting/fishing trip to Alaska.

Did you get to try the local beer in Pinedale? Our friends is the brewer there.

Unfortunately, I can’t get to Ireland if I don’t fly. Not wearing a mask, so they won’t let me fly anyway. And not vaxxed, so they wouldn’t let me in if I did get there. I suppose there’s a chance I’ll never fly again. I can live with that.

Still, I really would like to take another river cruise on the Danube and have beer and pretzels at the monastery in Regensberg, Germany. Best beer ever.

A friend of ours make a 20 hour drive from Montana to San Angelo 3 times a year, she is 67, her mother accompanies her, her mother is 88. They get to Amarillo and spend the night, the following morning they head to San Angelo. If those 2 old ladies can do it, it should be a walk in the park for you.

Wow! We did the the round trip to NE Montana, 15 miles from the Canadian border, in 3 days each way last month. I don’t drive at night anymore, 500+ miles a day is enough. I’m not in that big of a hurry. It was 1620 miles total. We make a stop for the night in Amarillo, then Wheatland,WY.
