My brother and I are planning to go whitetail hunting for the first time on some property we have in East Texas. We plan to be out on the morning of opening day for the general season. We’ve found a heavily used trail along a creek that seems to be used by multiple deer everyday. Unfortunately, the wind always seems to be blowing in the direction that the deer are coming from. The range we would be shooting from is only about 25 to 30 yards using shotguns. Do y’all have some tips to keep our scent to a minimum, and possibly something that would entice the deer to come in if they’re weary?

Well, theres doe estrus, get you a bottle and apply generously like cologne!

So no way to set up downwind from them? If not buy some scent killer to wash your hunting clothing in plus spray down your boots, hat, etc.

It is hard to beat a deers nose. You might try going up if there are trees large enough. As the morning warms up thermals rise. Hope it helps and good luck.

If you don't have a choice with hunting the wind try using
Tink's #10 Skunk scent to cover your human scent.

And to the forum

Pop up ground blind. Brush it in well and make sure you have a back drop. Close all windows & door up tight, except for one window to shoot out of. Most of your scent will stay in the blind. Use scent killer on your clothes & hat (yes, it works). There are also several good cover scents on the market but go real easy with that stuff. Use too much and it could spook them. Hand feed regular deer corn within range to bring em' in/stop them. Good luck.

Probably a little too late at this point for opening day, but if it's your property you may consider cutting some shooting lanes. I imagine at the range you're talking about you would have to do all that much, but it might give you a better spot to sit given your wind situation. The activity might make em weary for a bit if you are dead set on opening day.

As far as attractant, the estrus is probably a good bet with ruts getting going here soon. We've had a lot of luck with the attractant blocks as well. We usually dump one at a feeder every time we were out to fill over the summer and it was usually gone by the next visit. Good luck.

This. Scent blockers don't work. Go high, move your stand downwind, or wait for the wind to change. When a cold front comes through, the wind will likely be out of the w or n.

Just don't hunt it until the wind is right. Hunt another set up. Biggest mistake I see people do.

Do you have cameras out to know you have a heavily used deer trail? Hog tracks look a lot like deer tracks, and their are a whole bunch of them in north east Texas. Not doughting you on the deer trails, just know, after hunting NE Texas for over 25 hrs, hogs are a VERY big problem! PS, welcome to the forum!!!

An old timer I knew used to put of bunch of old socks and underwear in a mesh bag and hang in the area. He thought the deer never got used to the smell, but never sensed danger because it was just a bag hanging from a tree. He most always got a deer.
