I was reloading for my new .224 Valkyrie, using brass from Federal and Hornady factory ammo. About 25% of the time, I was unable to seat the primer in the Hornady cases. The Federal cases were no problem. I tried 3 different small rifle primers on the Hornady brass, but none would work. The primer pockets on the brass that wouldn't accept the primers looked slightly out of round. Have any of you ever run into this problem?

I have had lots of difficulty with seating primers in Hornady 7-08 brass. Never noticed the primer pockets were out of round, but they just seem tight or shallow or something. It takes lots of pressure to get them seated properly.

Hornady may crimp their primers. You will have to remove the crimp.

scott, the interesting thing is that the seating problem only occurs in a few of the cases. If Hornady crimps those primers, I would think that the problem I'm having would occur much more frequently.

Hornady crimps their TAP line of ammo . if the brass is from that a crimp could very well be the issue

This x2........ Otherwise I've had more issues with primers unwillingly falling out of H brass than anything else.

I swage and cut rifle brass. I have an RCBS swage die set and an RCBS uniformer mounted to my Franklin prep station. Corrects diameter and depth. Do it once per piece and you're done.

Pass the gravy.

Thanks, folks. I've never had to swage primer pockets before, but since I have 4 boxes of the Hornady brass, I'm going to begin doing it!

Buy the pocket cutter.

Unscrew it from the handle, and chuck it in the drill press. Turn on the press, hold the brass, and push skyward into the spinning cutter.

I processed some Hornady .308 once fired brass two months ago, and had to cut the pockets.

Federal is the softest brass out there. .308 I've only got three firings out of it until it will no longer hold a primer.

I was getting about 40% or so to seat in Hornady 6.5Grendel but it was not right. I ruined 2 primers before I realized the crimp was there. Yes, I'm a slow learner. Put the crimp remover tool in the drill press and in a few minutes the problem was gone, forever on that batch. Priming was MUCH easier after that. bang

Wasteful , lazy and expensive.

Some of us put in a little bit of work to use perfectly good brass.

I bought a bunch of LC "processed" brass a while back, the primer pockets had been swaged.. About every third case wouldn't take a primer. I ended up cutting every single piece of that stuff to make it workable. It can be a tedious process, but cutting them was the better way to go for me. Now I just cut any crimped brass I run across, no chance it doesn't take primer, or mess up a primer, from then on.
