Can anyone tell me what zebra tastes like? Is it similar to any other game meats ? Is it even edible?

I"ve had mountain zebra filet that I shot in Namibia and it is outstanding, and looks almost pork-like. Very similar to an a high grade beef tenderloin in taste. The plains zebra I shot wasn't recommended to eat so we didn't . It had lots of yellow fat and didn't look near as clean as the mountain zebra did.

I think I've had it, but honestly can't recall. I know it and hippo are the preferred baits for lions. smile

I will concur that Mountain zebra seems better to me than Burchells, from my Namibian hunts. Reminds me of the lighter color of a beef eye of round, compared to the dark red of a sirloin or loin. Burchells (Plains zebra) always seems to have that stronger tangy taste, like a poorly finished out grass-fed steer here at home. Stronger than I care for, and after beef, deer and elk I was surprised by the dark yellow fat! It is better than any of the horse that I've had in Kazahkstan tho!!!

That's a great picture.

I have never eaten zebra or hunted Afrika, but I know a lot of folks that have.

Been offered work offshore there many times.....good money sometimes, but no thank you.

Several of my buddies did though and were constantly being fed "ribs from the zebra".

They told me that was the worst meat ever, way worse than any jack rabbit. They complained but nobody seemed to care.

Then the whole starving crew showed up together finally fed up, and told the cook if you feed us one more f'n zabra rib we are going to throw you and your team overboard.

The food got better after that LOL.

If you have spent much time i Europe you probably have eaten horse meat, Zebra meat is about he same. Real dark, blood looking, but it tastes good, kind of a sweet gamey taste.
