My momma has always been a good cook, don't recall anything she made that was bad, but there were several things that she made I didn't think much of growing up that seem to have gotten better with time.

Her potato salad and pea salad are the two most recent standouts. I've had a little bowl of her potato salad every day at lunch since Saturday and I find myself sad tomorrow is the last one I have lol (leftovers from a birthday party). How about yall?

Sweet corn. Had field corn growing up.

That one is the opposite for me, I loved corn on the cob as a kid, never really eat it anymore.

I always assumed all cornbread was like my Grandmas until I tasted it somewhere else. She made it in a cast iron skillet so the bottom was slightly crunchy . I’d love to have a plate of that today , with her

Ah corn bread. My momma spoiled me, she would take it out just a little early and the center would still be a little gooey like I like it. I always got the center piece and the rest would be cooked through.

Liver and any kind of greens, I hated them when I was a boy.

Now I can't get enough. Crazy how that works.

Steak, my Dad could not cook a steak. Mom was a great cook so it's the other way around, I miss her cooking from when we were growing up.

Liver and onions, with a large side of mashed taters. Wife won’t cook the liver, and it’s hard to find in restaurants. I miss Luby’s.

Liver & onions - hated as a kid; love it now.
That's not all; asparagus, brussel sprouts, spinach, sauerkraut, eggplant, squash, beets; - I tear all that up now!

My grandma made the best butter beans ever, I could live on nothing but them, with side pork in them
My Mom cooked almost everything great, but really excelled at pecan pies, pimento cheese, and corned beef and cabbage for my Dad

Nowadays, I eat most anything in front of me, but always wonder where the home-cooked taste went???

There is a song called A Big Bowl of Butter-beans.

My Mom made the best butter beans ever too, good Lord they were good. Remember well and I would stuff myself. I'm guessing that my Grandma taught her how to make them, because she was a great cook too but I dunno.

My Mom also cooked everything great, but she really loved to bake....and boy she did a lot of baking. I was always in her way as a little kid trying to help her in the kitchen, but she never yelled at me. Always making pies and cakes for everyone. She also did a lot of her stuff for fundraisers or sold for weddings or other special events. I was 9 yrs old when she died but I remember her well.

You wonder where the home cooked taste went??? Let me answer that question for you Sir. The answer is LOVE. If you don't slow down and cook with love, you ain't ever gonna get that home cooked taste.

Bacon grease & cast iron helps though. grin

I miss the meals I ate as a kid growing up. Part of it is the quality of food along with my Mother being a great cook. We had a small farm with 2 to 3 acres in garden, pasture with 10 cows and a bull, one calf per year for our beef, picked up and fed out 2 hogs each year as well and grew our animals out how we wanted them. Picked the vegetables ready but not getting old, pck huckleberries and blackberries from the local woods... If you want great food start with great ingredients, then add in home cooked out lard, cast iron and a very sweet lady that knew what to do with all that = great food.

I miss those days and times a lot.

Never liked Liver and Onions though, nearest I come to eating liver is use it for fish bate and catch a catfish I will eat the fish.

Brussel Sprouts. eeks333 Yep, my wife can cook.

Now pickled beets I have hated my entire life.

And I now appreciate the history of Lutefisk, but I'm not touching that stuff with a 10' pole. You have to be Norwegian.

I'm eating it now...cabbage rolls. My grandmother used to make them and I was never a fan early one. Grew to love them right before she passed but no one ever got the recipe. I found a little cajun meat market back home with an old lady who makes and sells cabbage rolls and they are almost identical to what Grandma used to make.

Someone above mentioned their dad not being able to cook a steak. Same here. I was in college before I realized a steak didn't have to be dark grey on the inside. To my dad, grilling was an event. A loooooong event he didn't want to ever end. So everything we had off the grill was burned to a crisp.
