I've been on a co-op for 12 years and never had the option to shop plans. I'm having to do so now and would like some input.
Most of the plans I see come with usage credits. If you use between 1000-2000 kwh then you get a $100 credit. It seems strange to me that if you use 1100kwh your bill will be a lot less than if you only use 900kwh.
There are a lot of providers. I know I want a fixed rate plan but not sure how long I should lock it in for. Also, the plans vary greatly.
What I'm looking at right now is with GEXA Energy. 7.9c per kwh if you use between 1000-2000kwh with the $100 credit, 12 months fixed.
I'm not positive on the energy usage, the house is 1875sqft, central heat and air, all electric, 6 years old, decently insulated and energy efficient. We turn off lights and don't waste electricity. Should I be over 1k a month?

My house is about the same size. My average usage is 1400 to 1500. My tstat is set at 77 day and 74 night in summer. 68 constant in winter. I only go over 2000 when it gets real cold. I might have gone over once winter before last. I am also all electric with no heat pump. 2 or 3 months I drop below 1000. I had a tiered plan one time and liked it. 1000 to 2000 was a flat $127. If I knew I was under 2000 for the month I would crank the AC. The Gexa plan is a little bit of gambling.

This may not be the immediate answer. But, I use energy ogre. It shops for me, so I don’t have to keep up with it. Lack of history might be a problem. You could sign up for a 3 or 6 month plan, then get a baseline.

You could sign up for a 3 or 6 month plan, then get a baseline. Ogre is OK for larger consumers because it spreads the fee over higher usage. It has never worked for me because I can always match their rates. It takes me 10 or 15 minutes every 2 or 3 years to find a new plan. I will check rates on occasion and switch if I see a pay back after paying a cancelation fee. It is hard to say what natural gas prices are going to do in a year but right now I would not go longer then 1 year.

I don't have the time or inclination to keep up with it. Energy Ogre wins in my book. EO has had me on 6 month contracts lately.

I checked into Ogre and decided I can do what they do and save the fee. With 1,875 sq.ft, traditional insulation, medium efficient unit I think you will easily exceed 1,000 kw per month.

I don't know what the SEER (Standard Energy Efficiency Rating) is, but it is more important than all the lights in your house.

So I guess your time in worth more then $960/hour based on 15 minutes of work every 2 years. It actually does not take me 15 minutes to switch but I figured in a check of rates and payback calculation.

I don't know what the SEER (Standard Energy Efficiency Rating) is, but it is more important than all the lights in your house. I would say how energy efficient the way your house is built is much more important than you SEER on your A/C.

Love Energy Ogre. I don't want to mess with it, and they do. Win/win.
