Surgery or will it heal on its own?

Surgery. I am going to an orthopedic surgeon next Monday for what I think is a meniscus tear. I had meniscus surgery 17 years ago on my other knee and this current pain and discomfort feels the same. A tear will not likely heal on its own.

Bear with it if you can; have had a tear in my left knee since Oct. 20 and still do most of what I like to, hunt and golf. Golf play or practice, 3-4 times weekly. Knee stability in that left knee is more an issue than actual hardcore pain. The pain is more a soreness than anything else at this point.

I've had surgery for 2 of those (one foe each knee). Life changing. Was walking the same day ...easy recovery and back to normal.

Depends on location and amount.

Simple surgery. You will walk out.

Here's a video. For some reason captions appear in a foreign language, and I can't get it to change.

I have had two. No big deal will slowly walk out the same day and be almost back to normal in three weeks. Back to work a week later.
Full knee replacement well that's another story

Torn mine twice. First was surgery because it never stopped hurting. Second one was during the ice storm, hurt for a couple weeks then nothing so I didn’t operate on it. Depends on pain level and stability.

I've had a torn meniscus for years.
No scope and no other surgery.

All I ever do is get a cortisone shot about once a year if it gets to hurting.

onward men.

A lot of times the doc will just clean it up with a wand and smooth out any tears/rips. The meniscus gets very little blood flow, and therefore, trying to suture two parts together and expecting them to actually grow back and hold like before can be tough. I used to sell this product, but it was pretty rare that it was used:

Really depends on where the tear is located. Either way it’s not a major surgery, just follow the doctors orders for any rehab and hopefully you will get some good relief.

I tore meniscus a couple years ago, but doc said he could scope it, but probably not acccomplish much due to cartilage wear and arthritis. Gave me a cortisone shot and prescribed a knee brace. It’s pretty good now.

Way back in the 80’s i had what they called a ‘bucket handle” tear, where the meniscus folded back on itself and brought me major knee instability. A scope job took out the problem, and recovery wasn’t bad. I remember the doc telling me that I was going to have arthritis problems in that knee, but that has never happened in the 30-something years since.

If you have an unstable knee, that’s a disaster waiting to happen, so get it fixed.

Mine healed by taking it easy. My wife had to have surgery. Good luck whatever path you take.

How old are you ??

In my old azz experience, I had both mine scoped for meniscus scraps about 20+ years ago. was told this would hold me till replacement time.

which is now, just had left one done, right replacing in January.

Listen to your Doc, get a second opinion if you don't like the first .

Dealing with a torn meniscus now. Bought a fairly expensive brace doc recommended. About the time I think it’s better, I do something stupid and piss it off again. Read a lot about surgery and a lot say there will be big arthritis issues after the surgery. I’m putting off surgery as long as possible.

The only substance on the planet that will make you grow new cartilage in your knees. I was bone on bone 15 years ago and I'm fine now after taking it for a year.

The worst part of having surgery is they puff up the knee to do the orthoscopic operation. Then for weeks you have this crunching cracking sounds from the knee until all the air is absorbed. Get the surgery, the tear will never heal on its own.

One shot is all it should take.
