I'm 58. 6'4" 381# and out of shape. I finally decided to do something about it and started the Atkins diet last week. I'm shooting for 250. sure seems like a long journey, but I'm excited about it. Gonna hand around this section for a while.

Have you ever visited a cardiologist? If not, maybe they could help you with some of the weight loss.

I've had a stress test. Surprisingly I'm not in horrible physical condition, just fat. I've had high blood pressure since my 20's when I was small. My primary is in internal medicine. He'll be happy.

I really think I had it early. One sick day and I was better.

You can do it! Start slow, always push to do a little better week after week and don't stop.

Good luck on your weight loss. Start slow and build up each week. I know of too many people that started out doing way too much, got sore, tired and frustrated and just quit. You are the only one that can make the decision to do it and it sound like you have reached that point in your life.
Your primary doctor is way more forgiving than mine. I am 65 years old, 5'6" tall and weigh 160#, so my BMI is 26.6 and my doctor is always on me to lose weight.
Again, best wishes, you got this.

Lots of good advice. I've gone through the weight loss journey a few times. Diets are great and they work, but folks tend to want to starve themselves so they can see quick results. But that's not always the best way to do it and can lead to overeating again.

Just a suggestion, but look up maintenance calories and figure out how many calories you can eat to maintain your goal weight. That way you're not starving while working toward your goal. There are calculators out there to help you with the numbers.

Good luck.

Us short folks don't have a lot of room for error. 10-15 lbs for us smaller folks can make a huge difference. I'm working on 60 years old, 5'6" and weigh 145lbs as of this morning. I was at your weight for a long time -- lost it and now it's hard gaining any back! I struggle just to mantain my weight and to keep from losing any more, but I am pretty active, too.

Sorry OP for the drift. Back on topic.

Hey there bigbob, I feel your pain. Been there/done that with about every diet plan out there.

Then, a couple of years ago my Cardiologist suggested I look into intermittent fasting, specifically as addressed by Dr. Jason Fung. He urged me to read Fung's book "The Obesity Code". I did and worked out my own intermittent fasting plan. Three months later I was 72 pounds lighter, and that weight is still gone.

The issue is that traditional diets tend to slow your metabolism causing a regain of weight, whereas intermittent fasting does not and may actually increase your metabolism.

Fung's boot is kind of a tough read, but fortunately he now has a number of easy watching YouTube videos in which he explains why traditional dieting hardly ever works, whereas intermittent fasting almost always does with long term results.

Here are links to what I think are Fung's best YouTube videos.

"Therapeutic Fasting - Solving the Two-Compartment Problem" by Dr. Jason Fung (36 minutes)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIuj-oMN-Fk&t=24s

"The Calorie Deception" by Dr. Jason Fung (37 minutes)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5F5o0a4p_3U&t=1884s

And here's a good one by Dr. Berg, especially the last half.

“How to Fix a Slow Metabolism” by Dr. Eric Berg (24 minutes)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt1DOJXAXF

If you want, I can send you an eating plan that worked extremely well for me and several of my friends. It's in MS Word format and will print on one page.

If you can't laugh at yourself, give me a call. I'll gladly laugh at you.

You got this, Bob! It’s a long journey to lose weight the right way and keep it off. Best advice I have is to stay positive and focus on your method & long-term results, not short-term successes and failures. It will be frustrating as hell at times - keep you chin up & take comfort in your process! up

Drink 1/2 your weight a day in ounces of WATER if you will add a lemon to the water its very doable

Cut out cokes, drink unsweet tea or water ONLY

It seems like a small thing but it adds up daily
