No one wants to put in the work anymore. When season rolls around, they want a spot in the boat but they don’t want to wake up early, don’t want to/have time to scout preseason, don’t wanna drive too far, don’t want to hunt past 9 and then complain about lack of birds. Rant over.

Get a good dog. When I had mine she never complained about getting up to early, how far we drove, how cold it was, how many birds we saw, or how long we stayed out there. Best hunting partner a man will ever have is a good dog.

Happened to my Buddys lease. This year he fixed up his own blind and feeders, filled only his feeders. Screw the rest who want to show up opening day and have everything done for them.
My buddy @70 is the oldest guy on the lease too.

I have two leases. They are the opposite extremes of each other. There has never been a conflict on either. I consider both the best hunting leases I have ever been on.

One you do your own thing. Come and go as you wish, get up early or sleep all day, whatever you want. Hunt were and what you want when you want. Your responsible for your own stuff. I don't think in 20 years on that lease we have ever checked or filled each other's feeders or worked on each other's stands. There has never been a scheduled work day. Meals are not planned in advance, you bring your own food, and seldom go to town together. Not much in the way of rules, but nothing has happened to ever need them.

The other, we have routines. Other than actual hunting, everything is done together. We check and fill each other's feeders, we almost always together go to town for dinner, we help with each other's kills, we work on each other's stands, we schedule work days and that has included the landowner. Hunting hours and the rest of each day are often on a schedule. You have to let the landowner know when your going and leaving. There are rules.

You either gotta go with the flow with the least or group you have or has become and not try to buck it or become the lease martyr. Just go and have fun. Or find a lease or group with the type of hunting/living mentality that you want and hope it does not change over time, because most do eventually in one direction or another.

Yep, 90% of my hunts are just the dog and I. I really like it and enjoy not having to deal with the headaches 68A points out.

Oh Man. Twice in one season, different guests I invited duck hunting. What are the odds. I had given each a time and place and let them know I would be going earlier to unload the boat so we could get out in time to get to our spot before the competition. It was crucial for them to be on time. Both days, each guest showed up late. They did not even try to lie to me as to why they were late because both showed up eating the breakfast burritos they had stopped to get on the way. I would have preferred they both had told me they had a flat tire or something and kept the burrito wrappings in their car. And the worst part is not that both times there was not time to get to the spot I had spent half the day before scouting to find, but the fact they did not think to bring me a breakfast burrito of my own. Both just sat there in front of me eating their last one. And if one of those two is reading this, that is why I did not invite you back.

Talk about ungrateful. Guess I was raised different.

One thing I like about hunting solo is not being on a schedule. I hate that. Hunting solo and you are running late, who cares. Dog doesn't care.

If you are going to hunt with someone else you got to be on time, 15 minutes early is standard. But I'm 60 years old, on schedule all week hitting deadlines, on weekends or time off I want to chili and not worry about deadlines and being on time for something. The only way to do this is hunt solo, with a dog.
