Yesterday was still and rainy so we lit off a burn pit. Five hours later I looked out the window and the pasture was on fire. Son and I got it put out, burned 1/2 acre or so. Way too dang close to a mess.

Actually wasn’t a burn ban, and I had checked in with the Sherrifs office in advance.

Was fortunate that everything was damp from the rain, and that the wind wasn’t blowing, and that I noticed it when I did.

It happens, might keep a closer eye next time but it will come back just fine. Glad you and your son was able to get it under control.

When I was a kid my dad burned about 5 acres on our place. A brush pile spread like, well you know. The local volunteer fire department which means 5 guys and no equipment helped us get it out. I learned many lessons that day and several others along the way.
1. Call and make sure there's no burn ban in effect.
2. Mow around the pile at least 20 feet.
3. Start early enough that you don't have to stay up half the night baby sitting it.
4. Fill a 5 gallon bucket with a gallon or 2 of water and soak an old pair of jeans in it. As the fire spreads via grass, swat it out with the jeans.

Glad you and your boy handled it.

This reminds me of when the guy down the road caught his tractor on fire, what a spectacle that was. I think it's still there.

Way too much fuel around the edge of that pile. You got really lucky, I hope the lesson took.

i learned a similar lesson last year. this is why i now use my box blade and make a 20-30 foot wide dirt circle around any and all piles before i burn... and constantly monitor the fire. wiling to bet your grass grows in nice next year where it burnt!

Also, you can do a lot with a rake putting out grass fires.

Glad it turned out well for you.
