Made a mid-week trip to the lease to check on something and decided to use the old ‘82 Honda. Although I keep a solar battery charger connected to it, it’s been at least 4 months since I last ran it. Turned the ignition key and didn’t see a lit neutral light. Pulled the seat and battery cover and found almost 13 volts across the battery. Now I’m thinking rats must have gotten inside and chewed a wire in two. That means it might be best to load and take it back to the house where I can work on it more easily. Not sure why but I decided to get on it and give it the old shake test. It was then out of pure habit that I kicked the shifter to make sure it was in neutral. Yep, you guessed it, light came on bright once I kicked it into neutral.

Had a similar instance years ago, except with the boat.

I always test start my boat at the house before leaving, without fail. Just bump it, make sure it busts off, kill it immediately, and then head out.

Well, this night one trip I was alone, followed my routine, got to the lake and turned the key to start the engine and nothing. No click, nothing. Got the meter out, checked voltage, had it everywhere it should have been, but no response from the ignition switch. So I break out the tools and commence to disassembling the control box so I can access the wires to the ignition switch and jump them out. I was going fishing one way or another dangit!.

Get everything torn apart, guys fishing the docks at the marina are standing around by now seeing if I can make it work or not. Start jumping terminals and still nothing! So now I'm getting mad. I reassemble the entire thing so I can just go back home, and as I was buttoning up the last couple of screws I bumped the shift lever and heard a "click". I immediately realized what had happened, and felt like a freaking idiot. After starting it at the house, I had put the shifter in gear so the prop would spin while driving down the road. When I got to the lake I pushed the lever into neutral, but evidently not enough to make the neutral safety switch. I had spent an easy 2hrs at the ramp, in the dark, working on it for no reason. Outwardly, I laughed. Inside I was humiliated that something so simple cost me so much time, not to mention the humiliation of having several witnesses to my dumbassery present. I was somewhat vindicated though when I pulled back in about 3hrs later limited on hybrid and sandbass.

Walked by the freezer the other night and on a whim, opened it. Top rack was cold but soft. Moved the top two shelves to the other freezer, so far everything else is cold and still frozen solid.
