Hognose! Mildly venomous and harmless, they like to eat toads. The back fangs puncture the toad so it can swallow it, the venom helps to subdue it.
Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

Yep 'dead' Hognose....shame. Good snake. They vary widely in color and pattern from one area to another. That one was beautiful. The last one I found on my place:

I had no idea they could spread their hoods like that and would instantly think it was a cobra that had gotten away from some maniac's collection.
High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

They really put on a show....but its all a bluff. You couldn't hardly make one bite you. If fact, as a last ditch effort they will roll over on their back (belly exposed) and play dead.

In East Texas we called them Spreading Adders. Neat snake, and what a great show they can put on. Have not seen one in many a year.

They are super fun to harass, hope the next one has a better outcome. After their puffing and hissing fails you can flip them upright and they will keep flopping over to play dead. They do like toads, took this a few years back.

I hope the "mildly venomous" statement doesn't make people here think they need to be killed on sight. They are rear fanged and the venom is mainly of use to subdue toads, their favorite food. I used to have several eastern hognoses in captivity and they literally will not bite unless you stick your finger deep in their mouth. They "false strike" with their mouths closed. I had a pet shop purchased "western" hognose who tend to be tan or sandy colored and forced it to bite me just to see what would happen. I had little red marks and the bite itched a little for an hour or so. I used to follow the snake forums when I had my collection and knew their venom was virtually harmless to humans. They are one of the coolest snakes with all their antics when scared and I hope people will always give them a pass. They love those toads!

For that matter the Garter Snake (U.S.) is also mildly venomous and possesses a neurotoxin that is not of any concern to humans, but there nonetheless.
