I always just use the vice at work when I need one but I think it’s time to buy one for the shop now that I’ve moved further from work. Oh well, improvise. I sure haven’t used the weights in a couple of years otherwise.

Vise. Drinking or whoring is a vice.

If I have to use mine again, I drilled a hole in the wrench and have a metal dowel that will drop through the wrench and the relief hole in the action to give positive engagement.

Buy a good one. Not the junk from the big box stores.
I would even suggest a used Wilton Bullet Vise off eBay.
I use my machinist vise every day. I even have a second one mounted vertical.

One of those things you get and wonder how you ever did without it.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

Should have done a how to since I was doing it. A note, many people say don’t buy the no-go gauge, just use tape on the go. They’re right, it works. BUT, if you’re cheap enough to not buy a gauge then you get what you get.

I played hell with that ejector pin. Hook a piece of brass into the extractor. Swing the brass around so it compresses the ejector. Hold the bolt and the brass up against a piece of angle iron clammped to the bench. 1/16" punch into the ejector pin hole. Pull the punch out. Ease the brass back around. Don't let the ejector and spring shoot out of the bolt. ^^All this is easier with a third hand to hold the brass and bolt.

They’re right, it works. BUT, if you’re cheap enough to not buy a gauge then you get what you get. Not sure what that's suppose to mean but tape works perfectly...what you get is a no go gauge that costs you 3 cents every time you use it. Matter of fact, I did it last nite with a new 300wsm barrel I'm working on. I prefer the clear packing tape that is about .002-.003 thick and I'll stack them if needed. I'll typically use an old barrel end I've cut off and lightly tap the edge of the gauge and then the tape matches the gauge perfect and isn't a PIA to cut. When you are stacking a collection of reamers extra expense of a no go can really add up quick. FWIW - I'd get a barrel vise. Viper is an affordable barrel vise that does a great job. https://www.viperbench-rest.com/f_class_feet_for_the_viper.htm FYI - Brownells sells them too. I will wrap the barrel in a business card or a discarded toilet paper roll to protect the barrel finish. If you don't have a regular vice you need one of those too...I would get a pair of soft jaws and then you can put your rifle in it very easily. I would say good luck but it appears you didn't need luck, you got it...congrats.

Jason, does having the brass in it make it easier to drive the pin out? I observed warnings about the pin/spring flying out so was prepared for that. I dont know if they apply any kind of glue to the pin, but I played hell getting it out. Will try to remember that advice if/when I do it again.

I sure haven’t used the weights in a couple of years otherwise. I like the way you think!! I once put together an AR15 on the living room floor with no vice. Mine involved repurposed bits and pieces of stuff on hand that included using an AR armor's wrench, a small Rigid strap wrench and some U-bolts and other hardware procured at the local Ace Feed and Seed down the street. (Same living room I built the dog house in that would then not fit through any door to get it into the back yard. But that's another story. At least I waited till it was finally outside to paint on the epoxy coating.) Hell, with your assortment of weights, a tape measure, some math skills and a little bit of basic physics formulas, I believe you could use that contraption for a torque wrench!! You got yourself a multipurpose tool there! I am thoroughly impressed!!

Also, if you decide and get to where you are doing it more...both Brownells and Sinclair make an ejector removal tool for bolts. They are handy, I use the blue Sinclair one frequently.

I dont know if they apply any kind of glue to the pin, but I played hell getting it out. Will try to remember that advice if/when I do it again. Brass pushing on the ejector compresses the ejector spring. So all you're really fighting is the friction of the roll pin in the bolt. I've never even tried driving one out, without first compressing the ejector spring. If you were driving on the pin, with spring pressure also on it, I am sure it was hell. To me, that's like trying to get the caliper, with new pads, back on the rotor without first C-clamping the pistons back down. No wano.
