My 2020 West Texas free-range elk is home. Safari Studios does great again. Long story, short: I was invited on a “once in a lifetime” hunt in Pecos County. We bugled bulls for 2 days, and saw this bull at about 1300 yards late in the evening with some cows. He isn’t the biggest, or highest scoring bull on the ranch, but it was a good representative sample for my first bull elk. I knew he’d look good on the wall. We went back on morning 3 to find him again in the same canyon with the cows. He went into a header out of site, so we made our way to the mouth of the header and tried to bugle him back out. We knew it might be tough since he had cows and their were about 10 other bulls in the canyon. After 30 minutes of calling, he came out and I shot him with my Bergara 300WM at 90 yards. How did the meat turn out in 105F. It was okay. We were able to get a vehicle and ice chests close to the animal. There were 4 of us working on it so we made short work of it.

Congrats Great bull, even if not the biggest. On my West Texas e k it was also 105 degrees that day and it turned out to be the best tasting bull I have eaten. If you get them cooled down quickly it's a non issue. It's all in the game care before it hits the grill. Our primary meat at my house is Elk, kill one every year. We raise beef but they always get sold.
